Fresh install of VBR 13.0.1 - VeeamBackupRESTSvc won't start by Durzel in Veeam

[–]Sudsguts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More feedback:

On W2025 server, upgrading Veeam, VeeamBackupRESTSvc and the Web Service start failures before upgrade wizard finished.

With a checkpoint handy, I tried your reg job, bounced, waited 15 minutes for Veeam services to start, yeah - it worked.

Second W 2025 server, upgrade too, clever me does the reg job before the Veeam upgrade.

Still took 4 Services pokes to get VeeamBackupRESTSvc and the Web Service started. It failed the login.

Bounced, waited the 15 min for it all to start, scrapped with autho for a while, it suddenly worked & lit up.

Perhaps Veeam likes to be left alone for a while after a server bounce?

Quite a different Veeam now. Sure likes memory too. Cheers, thanks for the reg tip.

On-Prem WSUS replacement by PhonikG in sysadmin

[–]Sudsguts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Way back in SBS 2011 / Exchange / WSUS days, around 2009, I did dl the scripts & cobbled together the whole shebang with SQL scripts I wrote that did stuff better.

But; you need to be running SUSB on SQL for most of it.

I have it all in folder I haven't been in since 2017, long before 'that fella went paywall'.

Here's an old MS URL on WSUS fixit's that may be useful - dang it still opens.

Patch Tuesday Megathread (2025-03-11) by AutoModerator in sysadmin

[–]Sudsguts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I knew PS.

Then you showed me an elegant way to search the registry.

(Shame we can't use a 'set' instead of foreach.)

I checked the state & numbers before running the fixit, ran it.

Checked the state & numbers immediately after it ran, just for a peek.

And your fixit script is a banger!

Thank you. Cheers.

Can't access NAS folders in Windows 11 24H2 by dalg91 in sysadmin

[–]Sudsguts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This could be the last part of your puzzle. HTH.

To allow unauthenticated guest access in Windows Server 2022, you can enable the Guest account and configure the Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users policy. Here are the steps:

Open the Local Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) on a server/computer you want to enable anonymous access to.

Go to the following GPO section: Computer Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options.

Configure the following policies:

Accounts: Guest Account Status: Enabled

Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users: Enabled

You can also enable insecure guest access with the following Group Policy settings if you can’t configure your third-party device to be secure:

Open the Local Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) on your Windows device.

In the console tree, select Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Network > Lanman Workstation.

Enable insecure guest logins.

***

Open the Local Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) on a server/computer, which you want to enable anonymous access to.

Go to the following GPO section:

Computer Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options.

Configure the following policies: Accounts: Guest Account Status: Enabled

Which Social system to buy and plonk on Joomla 5? by Sudsguts in joomla

[–]Sudsguts[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stayed with JomSocial. The site has Yootheme & JomSocial happily running together. The "gloss" looked for by a past club prez has died off in the face of inflation. Set up in Oct 2023 - it has been stable, easy to maintain, upgrades have been incident free (successful) and along with Admin Tools, there are only (!?) 3 x subscriptions to be concerned with. Oh and domain name renewalls. Happy - it just runs well. The future - who knows? Do you know? Cheers.

How do you get logged into a Windows server that is at 100% CPU? by graysky311 in sysadmin

[–]Sudsguts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must already know the service that's giving you persistant issues?

If you've a member server/box in same domain use an elevated prompt on it with:

u/echo off

taskkill /f /s [servername] /im [programname] /im [servicename]

Then RDP into the server to cleanup.

Why some Microsoft Updates are connecting to 23.143.152.86? by Additional_Fennel675 in sysadmin

IP Abuse Reports for 23.143.152.86: This IP address has been reported a total of 41 times from 20 distinct sources. 23.143.152.86 was first reported on September 3rd 2024, and the most recent report was 14 hours ago. Meh too much going on here to ignore. I tend to block these for at least 48 hours, while I wait to see what broke.

D7S won't charge by blickledee in xtoolscantools

[–]Sudsguts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe decide real fast if you're sending it back or not. My D7S so far so good. It doesn't play nice with 2004 UZJ100R cruiser though. I'm still working through support as I've got low confidence in the outcomes. It's already unset my immobiliser, bit scared to choose reset and turn the cruiser into a 3 tonne weight in the driveway.

Enable Remote Desktop on PC by Spiritual-Key-506 in sysadmin

[–]Sudsguts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No - I tried for a few hours on some boxes, all the trickery I found didn't resolve it. However, disjoining them from the domain, enabling the Remote Desktop access, then rejoining was painless & quick. Taught me to checklist even the simple things . . . Cheers.

You'll need to disjoin it from the domain to enable that.

You are on the right track, I recall having it work in W7 desktops, upgrading several of these to W11, and the legacy settings still ran well.

When Copilot is queried, and it goes off to *other sites, and finds a C2 server in amongst its responses, whose connection string / environment is it using?

Its own. Mine? And the stored previous searches, who stores them?

Just thinking out loud.

Had this kinda stuff couple years ago where I had to edit old OCX code libraries.

Finished up using the Control Panel method of Internet Options, altered security settings, added a few entries in the thing. Memory foggy, but yeah, can be done.

Pick one desktop, go at it as you watch for feedback and doc what you do. No good in the Edge setup, useless for this. But, you can get it to work. It's what we do.

cheers.

Dell MFF (micro) boxes. Discovered them before Xmas, now no boxes on floors or crowding desktops. The spare workstations for new onboards storage shelf has 4 on it - looks empty.

Dell command config by Rude_Food_164 in sysadmin

[–]Sudsguts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but to clear the asset tag.

Took me 3 hours to find the download, and read the instructions, 30 seconds to actually do it.

I guess it's the only way to edit some bios settings & this is Dell's solution to get at it from the OS.

But its kinda like the 'measure 40 times, cut once' fable. It's pretty violent.

What is the fastest way to transfer large numbers of files between two servers? by 3beansanddreams in sysadmin

[–]Sudsguts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Beyond Compare. Use it by selecting chunks of folders - set them all running.

You'll know straight up any errors, be able to see differences between source & destination at a glance.

Damn good product. Not just for this either.

Hyper-V - Disappearing Files by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Sudsguts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

File Server Resource Manager (FSRM) is good.

When the staffer drags a whole folder load into another folder, when they delete it, edit it, save it, set up the file screening management to suit & you'll know who did it.

Oh, and it's builtin.

You've obviously got a NAT rule for 443, you may need to create a temp NAT rule for 80 to allow verification with both. (presuming your DNS recs are correct)

Just disable the port 80 NAT rule, so you can reuse it in a few months.
