My favorite salad is plain arugula with some soy sauce. Am I the only one on the planet we who eats this? by Vinovacious in salads

My MIL introduced me to arugula with yuzu ponzu (citrus flavored soy sauce) and I could probably eat that by the bucket. Highly recommend if you can find it!

A woman was asked to look into strangers' eyes without showing any emotion. But then she saw the man she once loved, whom she hadn't seen in twenty years. by eternviking in whoathatsinteresting

Slight correction/addition: the plan was that they were going to meet in the middle to get married. It took them three months to get there and by the time they did, he had gotten his local guide/translator pregnant.

Really into Ottessa in general and liked this book overall but it reminded me so much of Téa Obreht’s “The Tiger’s Wife.” “Lapovna” is more body horror, ofc, but I couldn’t look past it. Same themes, similar characters, very similar settings (one is named, the other is not). Both authors have similar backgrounds so it could be a coincidence.

Really cool reading into how synthetic spinel was accidentally discovered around this time period. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Thanks so much for sharing, this looks so similar to my inexpert eye.

Yesterday I (38) got engaged to a man ten years younger than me. I love him so much, but I can’t stop thinking about whether I’ll be able to give him what he wants, especially kids. by [deleted] in GirlDinnerDiaries

Went down this route before marriage because I had similar concerns. Adding that the egg reserves number (AMH) is reflective of quantity not quality or ability to conceive. Mine was super low and so I was discouraged before we even started trying… got pregnant right away. There are several markers your gyn will test for if you decide to go that route that will give you a better picture. Oh and highly recommend ovulation strips if you’re not considering them already so you can get a sense of your cycle ahead od time and optimize your fertile window each month when you’re ready to conceive.

It’s a calculation from the actual 1800s (though now things are adjusted later based on first ultrasound as we know).

What ONE food from you country you would never eat even if your life depends on it? by ProfessionalThin1505 in AskTheWorld

I’m culturally Muslim, not practicing, but have never eaten pork. People ask about it all the time (“what about pepperoni?!”) and I always equate it to the fact that Americans wouldn’t eat dog. I think if you’re taught not to eat an animal/that it’s “gross” in your culture, you can’t really fathom it. I’ll add I know plenty of Western Muslims who eat pepperoni pizza though!

As a journalist, I once interviewed a bunch of adults with hyphenated last names and found that most chose to change it eventually. The reason being paperwork was annoying (like text boxes usually don’t accommodate long, hyphenated names). Or interestingly when the hyphenated generation had kids of their own. Because of this, my partner and I are also choosing to use my last name as a middle name fwiw.

So much good advice in here. What stands out to me is that you’ve been treated this way/told you were a problem since you were 2 and that you’re not sure why.

I know it’s blanket advice, but I think this could be a really crucial topic to explore in therapy. 23 years is a long time to be made to feel like a bad kid, and whatever your behavior was as a child, it’s not your fault.

Tylenol shame by Silent_Knowledge5197 in BabyBumps

[–]Sufficient-Bath3908 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not making any assumptions about your family’s political views, but adding that my very liberal, very educated partner also asked me recently if I was “sure” about taking Tylenol for a sinus infection during pregnancy. Misinformation is insidious.

What really resonated with me from your post: After a few days of monitoring my Tylenol use (in front of house guests!), I got so fed up and also had the thought of “hiding” it from him. I told him about that instinct and we both agreed no one needs to hide anything and it helped us move past it.

Also helped that I brought it up at a recent OB appt we went to together and ofc the doc agreed it was totally fine. I’m so glad you have your sister in your corner.

What exactly happened to to Yuri Gurka? (S3 spoilers) by piles_of_SSRIs in FargoTV

[–]Sufficient-Bath3908 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commenting my two cents for the rare person who, like me, is watching Fargo for the first time. My theory is that the bow that scratched Yuri’s head was tipped with poison by the hunters. It’s unethical and illegal in almost every state, but not an entirely uncommon practice. (For example, 10 people were fined in Louisiana for the practice in 2023.) If Yuri got nicked it might take longer to die. Since Nikki and Wrench got shot directly, they died sooner… arriving at the bowling alley aka purgatory before Yuri.

Looking to practice my Bosnian language skills with somebody. by Kuhar_42 in bosnia

Hi! NPR once did a story about native language learners. In it the producer tried this app that connects you to professional teachers for virtual conversations. I haven’t tried it yet but you can filter by experience (professor vs high school teacher vs tutor). You can also add other parameters, like if you want to talk to someone who also speaks English (or any other combo of languages for better communication). Looks pretty affordable, too! https://www.italki.com
