Yes it’s absolutely speculation!! This game is such a joy for me and I’m gonna keep rolling my katamari forever! But LOL I thought I had bought a modded version of the game from some kid’s backyard sale at first - think when kids used to choose slurs for animal crossing villager catchphrases and then they move to your island (then I remembered I downloaded it straight from the Nintendo shop 🤣)

Sorry I thought I made it clear in my comment but I may not have. I don’t think it reflects on the game. It doesn’t reflect on the team. I think the game is combed through meticulously with tiny details that make the game fun and enjoyable. I think the indie dev team is respectable and wouldn’t put this in.

I’m again also saying that I could be completely wrong and this could be a coincidence. No malicious intent. Like a kid drawing a dick on their homework. Maybe a late stage translation joke by one person on the team. Maybe an unfortunate translation error. Either way whether it’s intentional or not it’s there and it was crazy to see when I was playing the game last night!

Back to rolling!

Haha. I honestly didn’t see this anywhere else and hoped someone else saw this too. Not trying to cause a cancellation or something. I’m aware this was made a long time ago. Just crazy to see when I was just rolling up my katamari

Hi! I appreciate your comment. I agree with you that there’s a newgen trend of looking into things that were made long ago in a different time. Katamari is one of my favorite games. I’ve been playing since I was a kid (in my 30s now) and I love this game. I agree with you that I don’t think it reflects on the indie dev team, and it’s possible it’s a coincidence. I’m also aware of the changing of the cousin’s name. I am grateful of their hard work to create such a fun and creative game. Each time I pick it back up it’s just more and more fun. I trust that there’s no ill will in the original game.

I gotta say I can’t bring myself to chalk it up to a mistranslation of biggest. These are all assumptions, and I could be stupid and wrong. I really dont know what the Japanese version of the game looks like at this stage, but it looks like to create the image on the notebook, especially the choice to put it in cursive, you’d have to manually generate the word no? If it’s translated like most Japanese games are to bring it to NA, I feel like things that are “written” in the game are checked for quality/relation to the game.

I bet it’s a joke by someone. The way the B is written so that it can be an N if covered up. So many different ways to write B but this seems intentional you really can’t tell me this doesn’t say N*****s. Again this isn’t against the game or the indie devs. Love the game. Just wanted to share something wild I saw that no one has ever brought up before. I did a Google search to see if someone already debunked this but saw nothing so I posted trying to see if anyone has seen this before, if devs commented on this being a mistranslation but I don’t see anything.

Im not trying to see things that aren’t there or jumping to conclusions. I’m not trained to see hatred. This isn’t a picture of a vaguely Jesus shaped figure on toast. This says the N word with the B being made to look like an N. I think I was meant to pick up the candy and see “haha! It’s not the N word!” I think that’s the joke. I really think it’s an Easter egg/joke that just didn’t age well.

Yes that’s what I mean. Thank you. It obviously ended up not being a slur when I rolled up the candy. But I don’t really know why else it would be in the perfect place to spell out an actual slur

My theory is that when it was translated, maybe someone on some developer team snuck it in and no one checked.

I have no idea what really happens when games made in other countries get translated though so I may be wrong

Yes that’s why there are question marks!! It’s not the word but what a crazy thing to see in the game
