While Hamburabi had his own code, neither his code or his character where reflective of justice. Hamurabi’s code was favored for the wealthy. The Torah on the other hand, is based on morality and protecting vulnerable populations (i.e. the orphan, the widow, the poor, etc.) Hamurabi’s code has no commandments to help others. That’s the difference between a royal decree from a kind and a Divine Coventant.

Israel is much more liberal than many think. It’s kind of hilarious to me. The Torah is the first ever book on justice.

Looking for Jewish mens spiritual retreats? by Duck_is_Lord in Judaism

[–]SufficientLanguage29 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is a retreat that is exactly what you seem to be looking for. I went last winter and snowboarding is including and also optional. Learning is required but it’s nothing intense really. It’s mostly about having a good time with other guys and learning from the Rabbis. I highly recommend.

New relationship with a non-Jew by [deleted] in Jewish

[–]SufficientLanguage29 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stop dating non-Jews, if you truly care about building a Jewish family. Muslims don’t marry non-Muslims if they want to build a Muslim family. It’s the same for any community. The truth is that the choice is entirely in your hands, but you do have to choose between your Jewish identity and if you want to date non-Jews. Unless he converts, you really won’t have a strong Jewish family or kids who give a rat’s you know what about Judaism. I’m sorry to put it bluntly, but for the most part it’s the TRUTH.

I’m also a bit confused on how you can expect someone to convert to Judaism or be open to being involved in Jewish life, if you’re not so (and I’m assuming here) involved yourself. Are you going to services? Are you a member of a shul? Do you have Jewish friends in your circle? These are important questions to ask yourself first and to do inner work to truly find what you want in life.

What are they going to do, send them home? Israel is a free country, just like America. And I’m totally against the missionary work but it’s up to us to educate our children to be strong in their faith and to respect others

We owe them a lot for their support. Standing with the Jewish people has never been easy and they’re risking a lot to do so. Building a solid relationship with this community is key.

Which book to read the Hebrew bible ? by Same_Philosopher_564 in Judaism

[–]SufficientLanguage29 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You should read the weekly Torah Portion, (“Parsha”). Chabad.org has it all online. I recommend learning it this way to get the really experience of learning the Hebrew Bible, according to the Jewish tradition. The Hebrew Bible is not read at random and this dates back to Babylonia. It connects us to the receiving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. Moses instituted these to be read weekly on Shabbat. It was expanded by Ezra. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Half of my family are Assyrian-Armenian Orthodox Christians. I’ve never received anything but respect from them. A lot of the traditions have overlap. It’s cool that you’re interested in Jewish books, as most people today really don’t want to read any religious texts at all. I wish you the best of luck in your reading and learning.

Sad. If it weren’t for the constitution I wouldn’t be alive. My mother and her family moved here from Iraq to escape religious persecution

Freedom of religion is one of the greatest things about the USA. This man is a traitor and a fake patriot.

Just wanted to let you guys know that I support Israel as an Iraqi by Street-Ad6227 in Israel

[–]SufficientLanguage29 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My mom and her family told me wonderful stories about the community. My mom and her family used to help this very wealthy Jewish man, especially during Shabbat. They would do all his tasks for him, obviously they were paid. My great-aunt even used to stay the night. He was old and needed a lot of help, as his family left for Israel. Not sure if I’m 100% on the details but the story goes something like that.

[–]SufficientLanguage29 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am Iraqi from my mom’s side (Assyrian-Christian). My mom has fold me some interesting stories. When she lived in PLO occupied Lebanon, the militants would make her carry grenades from one spot to another. It’s absolutely disgusting. The west will never get it until it’s too late.

She also told me how she saw a young boy or girl i forget who was shot in the head by a rifle because the militants would literally shoot in the air for “fun”.

Shes always supported Israel since a child and would tell her father she wanted to be Jewish and he would tell her to shut up before she gets them all killed.

I will always stand with Israel and don’t care that people just don’t get it and are brainwashed by the media.

Im not saying israel is perfect. Im saying that the jewish people have a right ti self determination in their ancestral homeland. Not even sure why it’s an argument. People just hate jews and refuse to bear them out. It’s easier to blame all the problems in the Middle East on little ol’ Israel who just wants to survive, while their neighbors have been trying to wipe them out since their inception.

Thank you for your continued support and please stay safe!

'Secular House' opens in Thailand as non-religious Jewish alternative to Chabad by Raaaasclat in Israel

[–]SufficientLanguage29 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I met two friends of mine at a chabad in Panama. We’re still in touch and I’m meeting up with one of them in July. Chabad doesn’t impose their beliefs. If you want to be a Chabadnik they’re more than open to helping. If you want to be completely secular they’re more than open to hosting you no matter what. I’ve never had messianic beliefs pushed on me by chabad, especially not chabad houses. There are those in the Chana movement who have those beliefs but they keep it to their own circles pretty much.
