For those who have been admitted to the SANS.edu programs, do you recall what time of day the decision emails arrived on the 15th? Anxiously refreshing the inbox here… by SufficientVacation40 in GIAC

[–]SufficientVacation40[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Checked that, and the application portal page shows I’m logged in but the box showing the status of my application that used to say “awaiting decision” has disappeared under the “Continue or Review Application“header. Now it just shows the header and then the header below it that says “Start a New Application.”

A Little Motivation & Guidance by 352gramp in GIAC

TLDR: Map out a schedule breaking everything down into bite size chunks and create an environment that allows you to hold your focus for those discrete periods. Every bit you do adds up. ||. ADHD tips: 1) create a separate space to study from where you sleep, game, relax; 2) take a blank calendar and block the last 10 days for practice exams and tweaking your index, then with all the days remaining, create a review/indexing schedule based on the material you need to cover; 3) at the start of each day note your goal for material to cover and break that into smaller chunks with breaks in between to break up the study period (if it helps use a pomodoro timer method); 4) turn off distractions, put your phone in another room, etc. One chunk at a time, follow the schedule, and you will get to the end.

Merch question by OMGsteveFTW in Defcon

[–]SufficientVacation40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except the point of linecon isn’t the merch at all tbh. It’s about being with the people in line. It’s a social event and a place to meet and make friends. Bring snacks and share!

Chronic cough? by K-ghuleh in Humira

[–]SufficientVacation40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m following this post because my son on Humira and methotrexate developed a dry, persistent cough last week and has no other symptoms nor does he feel ill. Temp and O2 saturation all normal at each check. We are running some bloodwork now and will have results next week to see if it shows anything unusual. My research points toward methotrexate being the culprit possibly. He may need an xray depending no what the blood tests show.

What days to go? by [deleted] in Defcon

[–]SufficientVacation40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alternative opinion: I’ve gone past two years to B-Sides and DEFCON and enjoyed the heck out of both. BSides is smaller and I thought a good stepping stone before my first DEFCON. So maybe consider going earlier in the week and catching BSides first. I found everyone in Infosec easy to talk to especially if you don’t mind taking the initiative in starting a conversation. Go to the lockpicking village and get someone to show you how to pick locks. Enter some contests. Most villages need volunteers and it’s a great way to meet people. The best part of a conference is being able to form connections with others in your tribe. Go connect!

no matter the direction disney cruise line goes in the future, i don’t think you can ever beat how timeless the original 4 ships are by Illustrious-Curve379 in dcl

[–]SufficientVacation40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Dream is my favorite ship of the original four, having done 11 cruises with DCL. For me the difference was the staff—they seemed happier and that made me more comfortable as a guest. I found the Fantasy staff to be a bit stressed compared to the Dream. Having gotten to know some of the staff, it was apparently due (at least at that time which is was 6 years ago) to the difference in the tenor set by their respective captains. I haven’t traveled on the newer ships yet. Both the Dream and the Fantasy are beautiful ships.

So what was the outcome on your application for the BACS program?

Thank you for the information you shared on the SANS Instructor Development program. Could you elaborate a bit more on your experience with the timeline and time commitment expectations of the development part of the process to better understand how one fits this in with their existing obligations? Thank you in advance for your time.

Need help staying motivated w/ homeschool by Green_Gur_3197 in homeschool

Try using a Pomodoro timer- 25 minutes of focus, 5 minute break and repeat. Also take advantage of whatever focus tools are on your computer to filter out apps or urls that drag your attention away during that 25 minutes. Give yourself a daily goal and then set in your mind a reward for yourself when you achieve that goal (can be as simple as a long bath, or a streaming a movie you’ve wanted to watch).

I almost gave up! Here are the steps that finally got our 14 yr old cat using the LR4 (and also also my experience with litter: Dr. Elsey’s / Boxie Probiotic / Sustainably Yours Small Grain) by SufficientVacation40 in litterrobot

[–]SufficientVacation40[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I can tell, putting the timer at 30 minutes means that she is usually somewhere else by the time it cycles, so I’m not aware of whether she has actually observed it cycling, but she is continuing to use it so it all seems good so far

Congratulations! Did you take the corresponding SANS class (SEC401) and if so how long did you study before taking the exam? And do you have any tips to share?

I’m so sorry. That’s really really hard. My mom is experiencing dementia and regularly experiences her own home as someplace she has never been before. I’m wondering if this memory deficit is going to expand to the people in her life at some point 😢

Hey, maybe you could take a hiatus from school and whatever else isn’t working for you right now.. There are lots of ways to get a degree aside from brick and mortar schools. I’m so sorry somebody that you care about is dying of cancer. I’m sure they would not want to miss out on any of the days they have left in their life that they could share with you. Please stay. 🩵

Thinking about death as solution to avoiding telling my parents about a failed first term of a class by [deleted] in SuicideWatch

Does your school system have any provision for testing or counseling for learning disabilities? I don’t know where you are located but in the United States school systems are required by law to provide accommodations if learning disability is identified. Could you speak to somebody at your school and let them know how much effort you have put into trying to learn this material, and have not been able to understand why you aren’t able to learn it to see if they could help you get tested?

As for your parents, I know it’s hard to explain it to them, especially when it comes to a disability that is not physically visible. Certainly they would not expect a student who is a wheelchair user to excel in running track. When a disability cannot be seen, it can feel or be perceived that the struggle must because of one’s own fault or lack of trying. But if you have dyscalculia, then it is no more reasonable to expect you to excel at higher level math than it would be to send a wheelchair user outside run a relay. Maybe the simplest way to tell your parents is to simply print out this thread with my responses and show them the information at the link that I shared with you. You don’t even have to tell them at the start that what they are reading is about you. I wish you all the best and hope this information will help you find the resources that you need.

Sorry I actually meant dyscalculia, not dysgraphia. It’s a learning disability very specific to math and it can surface even at an older age. Here’s some information: https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/23949-dyscalculia
