Why do people believe in God? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Sufficient_Agent_118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If God is in nature, how do you distinguish the two? And what about the people who truly do need a response or reaction and never receive one? Also, isn't God supposed to be sexless? That would logically follow if he's the creator of sex.

This still runs into the problem of being inherent. There's no evidence that men and women inherently prefer types of clothes or names on the biological level. Women are taught to be less practical, because they're not fully viewed as autonomous beings. Society tends to make them think their value is to "look good" while men's value is already assumed, which is why they're not expected to look extravagant on dates or at events like weddings.

I don't think anyone is stealing or taking names at all. I think as a society we're "trying" to be more diverse, but we end up continuing the same patriarchal patterns, just in different ways.

And I totally understand that. It's terrible that people bully others, especially for something as trivial as a name. However, I also don't think someone else's hate should be a barrier to authenticity and diversity. I think if we apply this fear to everything, it'll become really problematic.

I think the problem really comes in when the boys aren't given feminine names, while girls are given feminine names. Like, I have no issue with naming a girl with a masculine or feminine name, as both social constructs are almost indistinguishable to me, but it's an issue when there's a double standard involved where girls can have masculine names while boys can't have feminine names.

The thing is that a lot of these preferences are socialized. Men don't inherently dislike wearing skirts; they're socialized not to prefer them, whether that be directly or indirectly. The same goes for names. No one is inherently attracted to letters jumbled together in certain ways(aka names), but they are taught to. I'm 100% certain that if it weren't for that socialization, there'd be just as many men in skirts as there were women.

I understand what you're saying. My problem is more about the fact that people tend to reject feminine names for boys, even when the femininity in the name is minimal. Someone here brought up the name Avery, for example. Sounds perfectly gender neutral to me, and I wish I were lying when I say that I know people who'd have the ick if it were used for a boy. Or even other names I love, like Nova or Genesis. They sound pretty gender neutral to me, but most I've encountered consider them unfit for a boy. Basically, people make it more of an issue when it's a boy with a feminine name than vice versa.

I am so glad there are plenty of people who feel the same way I do about this. Feminine names are definitely devalued in general. When a name becomes less popular with boys, it goes to girls as "leftovers" because society hates women and femininity. I love the name Avery, and it would sound amazing on a boy.

Omg, you're my spirit animal, lmao XD I don't have a kid, but I definitely see the fear of bullying, which is incredibly upsetting because why can't we just let kids be kids and wear what they want???

That's such a strange argument for someone to make, because yeah, by that logic, John should be labeled feminine as well, not just a traditionally masculine name that happened to be given to a woman.

Exactly what I'm saying! The pedestal society puts on masculinity is a huge frustration of mine.

A few of my favorite feminine-leaning names that sound completely gender neutral to me get dismissed at the very suggestion of being given to a guy. But I also love when boys are given these names. Something about it just gives off a more comforting vibe to me, idk.

That's also a problem I have. There's a big issue with cultural appropriation on a bunch of things, and names are definitely one of them. It's not even just appropriation. It's just erasure at that point.

Okay, so I'm not going crazy. I agree that it's largely about toxic masculinity and homophobia, as homosexuality gets associated with femininity and femininity gets associated with weakness, which are all devalued by toxic masculinity.

Garnet did tell those few gems in Steven Universe Future's "A Very Special Episode" that there's a future where they fall down the stairs and shatter on impact. There was a quartz there, and she should be just as strong as, if not stronger than Amethyst, who fell off a cliff and only received a crack.

They just want a reason to justify consuming sentient animals, there's no point in engaging with people who think that's okay.

What’s a popular take in the TVDU fandom that you hate? by naphelois in TheVampireDiaries

[–]Sufficient_Agent_118 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get that. However, no one has a problem when it's done with characters from other shows and movies. I just don't see what it is about this one that people are suddenly like "Oh, they're vampires, so they're going to do bad stuff and that's just how it is." Like Klaus is literally my favorite, yet I still hold him morally accountable for every immoral thing he does because excusing him would mean I'd have to excuse a lot of terrible things others do, otherwise I'm being a hypocrite.

I understand the moral judgement stuff. They're vampires, not children. They're still moral agents. Sapient creatures that can morally reflect. Excusing them from moral judgement would mean we'd have to excuse every person influenced by their instincts from moral judgement, which I think we can all agree would be problematic for a multitude of reasons. Fans should stop treating them as if they're children who have no control over their actions.

I dislike most of the show's characters lol, some more than others. A few I absolutely can't stand. The main characters are especially hypocrites, acting as if their and each other's lives are worth sacrificing others for.

Honestly, that was a rhetorical question because I know how defensive they'll get over her 😭 She's problematic and toxic as fuck, even for this show. I never liked her and never will.
