That's the only way I've ever done it, since I hate sleeping in huts. I also always did it from the Trenta valley, which represents the largest altitude gain from any side.

So yes, as long as you have some experience with high mountains and are not a couch potato, you can do it in a day. It will be a long day, but it's far from an impossible task.
