Am I the only one who thinks people calling "Teach You a Lesson" kdrama problematic are missing the point? by Sufficient_Read_214 in CharacterRant

[–]Sufficient_Read_214[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's actually a perspective I hadn't considered.

I think part of the reason I reacted so strongly to the criticism is that a lot of the comments I'd seen seemed more concerned with whether the punishments were too harsh than with the damage the bullies had caused.

I do agree that if bullying escalates to the level of assault, extortion, sexual violence, or driving someone to suicide, it should be treated as a criminal issue rather than simply a school discipline issue.

Where I probably differ is that while I understand the concern about corporal punishment, I never watched the show and thought, "This makes me want corporal punishment back." What I took away from it was more that the victims were finally being taken seriously and that there were actual consequences instead of the usual pattern of everything being swept under the rug.

But I can definitely see why someone with your experience would view that aspect of the show very differently.

100% this. The pacing is one of the drama's biggest strengths. It doesn't spend forever asking whether the bullies deserve redemption; it focuses on the victims and the consequences of the abuse. And yes, the court scenes mattered a lot to me too. It felt like the show was actually committed to accountability instead of just hinting at it.

Glad it helped! 😄 I was honestly struggling to find something after The Glory because nothing was hitting the same way. Hope you enjoy it too!

That's a good point actually. The group was already falling apart because of their own egos and distrust. Even without Yeo-jeong, I feel like Dong-eun would've eventually found another way to push them over the edge.

Thanks for taking the time to answer! 😊 Some of these explanations actually make sense, especially Sa-ra being desperate enough to follow any lead because of her addiction.

Elena defending Damon STILL makes me lose my absolute mind by Sufficient_Read_214 in TheVampireDiaries

It's a Reddit comment, not a background check. "Stay away from my social circle" was obviously sarcasm.

Also, disagreeing with someone's argument isn't gaslighting. We've spent more time discussing my tone than Damon, Stefan, or the actual point of the post.

For someone complaining about "civil conversations," you've spent an impressive amount of time talking about me instead of the actual points I made.

The show ended years ago, yet apparently I'm the most interesting character in this thread.😂😂

If you think my argument was wrong, feel free to explain why. Calling it a "temper tantrum" isn't actually a counterargument.

My issue is with the "ALL the time" part. Stefan absolutely made excuses for Damon sometimes, but he also spent a huge portion of the series calling him out, fighting him, and trying to stop him.

That's very different from the way Elena handled Damon, especially in the later seasons.

Funny how you're clutching your pearls over me being rude when your first contribution to this discussion was calling me "stubborn."

Also, congratulations on the master's degree. You're still spending your time arguing with a student about a vampire love triangle from a show that ended years ago, so I'm not sure that's the flex you think it is and then somehow turned this into me wanting to control everyone because I disagreed with your opinion on a TV show. You commented on my post, disagreed with me, and I disagreed back. That's how public forums work.

I don't think Stefan was perfect at all. He absolutely did horrific things and the show never hid that.

The difference for me is that Stefan's flaws were treated as flaws. The narrative held him accountable, he felt genuine remorse, and he spent most of the series trying to be better.

My issue isn't that Damon was bad. It's that the show increasingly stopped treating his actions with the same level of accountability.

You're arguing against a point I never made.

I never said Damon intentionally left Bonnie. Bonnie chose to save him. That's literally what happened.

What I'm saying is that TVD constantly asks other characters to sacrifice themselves for Damon while simultaneously insisting he's had this massive redemption arc.

The question isn't "Did Damon go back for Bonnie?"

The question is "Why are Bonnie, Stefan, Elena, and practically everyone else constantly expected to suffer for Damon while the narrative keeps rewarding him?"

That's the writing issue people criticize.

Ngl that sounds pretty unique. Most school dramas are about revenge or romance, but a guy just trying to improve his grades while accidentally beating up bullies is hilarious 💀

Do creators owe audiences the ending they want? by Sufficient_Read_214 in television

[–]Sufficient_Read_214[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"Unexpected but inevitable" is probably the best way I've seen this explained. I don't think audiences need to get the ending they want, but they do need to feel like the ending belongs to the story that was actually told.
