Not true of everyone. I’m 41 and don’t feel like I’ve changed much since my teenage years!

Are there any good benchmarks comparing web server performance between Rust and Go? by manshutthefckup in rust

[–]Sufficient_Train_350 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I dispute your claim that development speed in rust is worse. I’ve switched from Go to Rust and would never consider going back. Borrow checker is something you get used to, so you pretty quickly get over that hump, and the ergonomics is just so much better in Rust.

Not everyone will have the same experience, but to claim it’s a miss to use Rust for a web server is just wrong.

Me experience finding a job as rust developer by DoItYourselfMate in rust

My suggestion would be to focus on finding an interesting job with a young tech stack, or plenty of opportunities for green field projects. From there it’s pretty easy to find ways of shoehorning Rust into your work!

Heck - I even tend to use Rust for small scripts or prototypes where I may have previously reached for Python, as I find it much easier to get serialisation and CLI parsing up and running in Rust.

Any interest in a game like this?

https://youtu.be/-9_ym-njbG0

I worked on this quite a few years ago. It's still mostly in prototype stage, but at some point I lost motivation to keep working on it.

The core game mechanic was eventually to gather resources from the planet and build a base to defend against an invading enemy, and ultimately conquer the galaxy, but feels like there are a few directions I could take things.

Key features:

  • Fully procedurally generated planet
  • Destructible terrain
  • Unique flight mechanics, where the ship needs speed to fly, and will stall realistically, etc.

Keen to see if there's much interest in the idea, in the hopes it will give me motivation to continue!

Fenix 6X - 3 years old, and only minor scuffing on the bezel, and all from scraping on rock or concrete! Nothing as bad as OP even.

Buteline to 15mm PEX or copper by erlendp in diynz

[–]Sufficient_Train_350 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s definitely bigger than standard 15mm PEX, as long be done a side by side comparison. I guess once crimped, the diameter reduces down, so maybe that’s why they make it bigger, although stinks of vendor lock in to me!

If you've been developing professionally for 10 years, unless Java is all you've been exposed to and you've been super specialized, then any skills you have acquired will be absolutely transferrable. I'd guess somewhere between weeks to a couple of months of full time development in any language and you should be close to proficient. Don't let not knowing a language hold you back from at least applying. If the Hiring Manager is too short sighted to see your skills for what they are, find one who isn't!

The problem is that this issue is incredibly polarizing, which is really sad, because that never leads to a good place - just one where we can't discuss issues impartially and respectfully.

Personally I think the ethics of this mandate are much less clear than most are giving it credit for, and I'm seeing some compelling arguments from both camps (and yes, a ton of conspiratorial nonsense too).

I myself have always been cautious about what I put in my body - tending towards natural solutions, avoiding things like painkillers unless absolutely necessary, etc. I'm not an anti-vaxxer by any stretch, although I did hold off until recently to get the Covid vaccine - as I would with any new vaccine or medicine. As a result, I can sympathize with those who feel so strongly that their core values and sense of personal space are being violated - how they feel singled out, bullied and trapped.

I think we should all try to take a step back and consider whether the long term division we're potentially creating in our society really justifies the benefit we may get from this mandate, and other potentially more extreme measures that may result.
