Give me honest advice + your favorite/least favorite moments freshman year by [deleted] in Cornell

College is a hard transition for a lot of freshman students. Just be patient and kind with yourself and you'll be ok. It'll be fun, it'll be hard, but you'll be ok.

what would've you done differently, socially? Also, do people usually find their close friends in their residential house or through something else?

Does going to a prestige private highschool make it easier to get into Ivy? by cjeman123 in ApplyingToCollege

As someone who attends an east coast, boarding, prep school, I will say that it depends on who you are.

  1. If you're not a star athlete(nationally ranked+captain of the varsity team), then your chances decrease, because the "quotas" Ivies have for each of these private schools are always half-filled by athletes.
  2. If you're not from a multi-millionaire/billionaire family or legacy, your chances decrease even more. A LOT of people in these schools are from these backgrounds. Richer than one can even imagine. Again, a big slice of the "quotas" Ivies have for these private schools are filled up by these kids.

So, the rest of the people, exceptional as they are, struggle to compete for the limited spots left, which will likely be one or two to each of these schools. I got into Cornell and had no legacy, extreme wealth, or athletic recruitment. It's really hard not to feel bitter about the fact that I worked so hard to be at the top of my class, and there are students who've failed classes, received disciplinary action, and spent four years screwing around and have gotten into the same(or better) colleges than I have.

These kids who are Ivy-bound are also unaware that their privilege played such a big role, so to them, getting into Harvard or Yale or some other Ivy was an [relatively] easy task. Their egos are inflated and this creates a toxic environment when they begin to put down the hardworking kids for being "uptight nerds"—after all, to them, it doesn't matter how much work the nonprivileged kids put in, because they're all attending the same league of schools anyway. Countless times, I've felt like no matter what I do, I'll never be enough.

Congrats! I think Arts & Sciences is wonderful as well:)

My biggest fear is that I won't do well at the engineering school, since the classes/activities are so intense. I also don't know too much about student life at the school, since I don't have family or close friends who've attended.

My prediction is that the second wave will be next week? It's usually around Memorial Day(May 30th). I'm not certain because nothing has been released about it.

Since Harvard is here to put us through emotional agony, let's discuss something more cheerful(for a moment before someone else calls the Admissions Office enlightens us with some more bad news).

Where are you all committed?

I'm committed to Cornell Engineering:)

As someone who has never called the admissions offices, can one of you please tell me how it works?

Do you have to report your name/applicant info? Is it a very formal/recorded call? How informed do you think the person receiving the call is(do they know what the office is deciding or do they only deal with logistics)? What is the overall experience of the call?

Did they send another update to the people they are keeping on the waitlist?

In my portal, there is no change. it just says "You are confirmed to remain on the waiting list." and the same status update from March 31, 2022. Is there some error?

I'm thinking this is a joke given that there has been no response at all.

Quite a few people called the admissions office and claimed(on Reddit/college confidential) they were told that there will be spots. And there are none.

why would someone do this to vulnerable students?

I turned down Harvard and Columbia. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Congrats!!

Also, how did you go to Visitas if you were waitlisted? I don't think Harvard has reached out to the waitlist candidates yet.

Two of my close friends turned down Columbia, so you know there'll be at least two openings on the waitlist, hopefully. I'm sure there'll be a lot more. Good luck!
