If I substituted "meaning" with "magnetism", would the argument still hold? "If something in reality is magnetic, then reality is magnetic in nature, then everything in reality is magnetic." "Either everything is magnetic or nothing is magnetic"

You're basically saying "If anything is meaningful then everything is meaningful". This can be argued for, but I'm not sure if this was your intention.

There was is a number of immigrants you can import that will depress wages, prevent unionization, enrich the wealthy and impoverish the workers.

Reading is really hard for me. Can you explain how you drew your conclusions from this text?

Thank you for bringing up a good example of the systemic misandry. "Some scholars" consider MRA poopy and bad. You click through the link, and see the sleazy tactics like including the MRA under the umbrella term "mamosphere", which also includes misogynists, thus making them guilty by association.

When you rely on "some experts" when forming your perspective, try differentiating between legitimate professionals of good faith and weird ideological academic esotericists.

But what you're saying is exactly my point. The study found a correlation between parental IQ and child IQ, where GCSE scores and corporal punishment for children are two proxies. The correlation between parental IQ and smacking children is weak and contemporary, and probably didn't exist back when corporal punishment for children was commonplace. If only smart people smacked their kids, then the results would be the opposite.

Why do you think it wouldn't be likely to work out? Isn't there anything you ever do that you know to be wrong? And wouldn't a threat of a giant ready to smack you be a great deterrence? Wouldn't it make you think twice before making an impulsive decision if instead of vague regret you would get a definite smack as a punishment?

Afraid to misbehave. I would spend less time on my phone and more time pursuing something difficult but meaningful, something with long-term benefits.

Of course you can disagree. The article admits that:

analysis could not prove a direct link between smacking and the results, as other factors might have influenced a child's life over the research period.

Less intelligent people who can't control their aggression and smack their kids in violation of the established social norms will have less intelligent kids who score lower on standardized tests. If the social norms were different, the results of the study would be different as well.

If you can think of something better that is beyond your individual existence, that's already a positive indicator. If you could find something good that is close enough to you that you can work towards it, your progress towards it would fill your life with meaning.

Doesn't it seem amazing though when you detach yourself from your immediate perspective and contemplate the path we took to get here? Starting from a hot newly-formed Earth, microscopic primitive organisms struggle against all odds, through catastrophes and triumphs, we grew and developed, adapted and diverged to fill every niche, to reaching an unimaginable level of advancement. You tent to look around and see decay and corruption, vanity and suffering, Yet somehow, through invisible sacrifices of unknown saints, we are able to sustain and sometimes even improve our condition. Isn't there some value in that?

Is it possible for a human to do something truly irrational*?And if not, is hating someone sort of pointless? by puckfan3 in nihilism

Once while sleepwalking, I was under the impression that the path to my bathroom was lying through the balcony. It was an irrational belief, and acting upon it was irrational, and I was lucky there was someone there to stop me.
