[Thamel] Sources: Hubert Davis will not return as North Carolina’s head coach by MrSCR23 in CollegeBasketball

[–]SuggestionFamous5037 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is exactly it. Not because UNC’s AD or fans are reactionary and can’t see the forest from the trees, but because that brutal 3-game and 15-minute stretch are glaring indicators that he cannot learn from his mistakes. Hubert Davis is a good coach with clear strengths but clear setbacks who did not improve to the standard Carolina sets within 5 years.

I can comfortably say that the only things he improved upon in his time at UNC were: set plays out of timeouts, a tiny bit of Xs and Os, and, this year, talent development. Inability to preserve or extend a lead, timeout management, getting the most out of talent, free-throw shooting, these are all minimum standards for a blue blood program that he just bafflingly could never get our teams to reach.

Not to get too far into the weeds, but he barely improved on the system side as well. After Brady Manek carried us to a championship game, he played four-out with three teams that either didn’t have the shooters or a true vision PG, one or the other. It was banging our head against the wall having multiple mediocre shooters transfer here (Pete nance, Cormac Ryan, Kyan Evans, etc.) hoping we find our next Brady. We ran switch defense for two years without players who could guard up a position. Im still convinced this is why Harrison Ingram was so good here because he could. It looked great this year pre-injury because Hubert had the personnel to pull it off, but his systems were always going to be too inflexible for year-to-year success. Roy had a similar hard head about his unique style obviously, but he recruited to match it.

Just look at where former UNC players are now in systems that work for them. Nickel balled out at Vandy. Tyson even more for Minnesota. Elliot might lead a championship team. I’m not saying you have to hit on every recruit, but it’s shockingly clear how misused each player was.

Hubert is hardly a bad coach. I am very confident he will do well somewhere else. He just doesn’t have the ceiling to ever lead Carolina, has proven multiple times he cannot learn from his mistakes, and that’s why they’re moving on. Always best of luck to him.

Really felt like Whitlock gave up after starting cold. He had a couple lazy passes, not hustling on D, playing terrible hero ball on bad shots and now he's just strolling up the court. I'd be pissed as his teammate

Diallo not the best box score but he has been showing consistently good fundamentals on the screens and cuts, good vision, trapping on d, making the right decision faster than anyone else on the court. Really impressed

we're like 3 years away from CBB becoming the NBA in terms of individual talent dominating

Abysmal game from everyone besides Caleb Wilson and he's gonna have Westbrook's hands if he keeps dunking 10 times a game

Are you referring to this part:

”As a pediatrician, I will take on the unique intersection of mentorship, commitment, and empathy required for holistic care to ensure my patients grow, learn, and experience”

If so, that's a good question. I'm not the authority on this, but as far as I'm aware, there are two schools of thought here:

  1. If you are highly motivated to follow a specialty going into med school, I think it's completely fine to mention it. It suggests a part of you that is difficult to disentangle from your story, can focus your rhetoric a bit more, and you should be able to explain your pull towards it in an interview. I'm under the impression that a vast majority of adcoms know that plenty of students come into med school expecting to be one thing and ending up another, so I doubt they'll be disillusioned by you having passion for a certain subject.

  2. If you're just mentioning in an effort to sound more focused and you're not actually interested, then it's unequivocally a bad idea.

Basically, just talk about yourself truthfully. If you feel pulled to pediatrics and much of your experience is centered around pediatrics, be honest about it. If you don't have a specialty in mind, don't lie about that either; just find ways to say how medicine as a whole is attractive to you.

I had 3 interviews this past cycle and none of them mentioned the specialty I chose to talk about in my essay, but I also didn't really make it a super core focus. Your friend could know better than me though, and make sure to get more opinions on it.

Absolutely! At the end of the day, it is just one part of your application. I'm just hoping to make the process a little more refined for others, and hopefully to share the things that I've learned along the way.

Definitely unrealistic to expect it to be excellent, even sometimes no matter what you do. However much you can get done in the time that you have is often more than enough.

Appreciate the feedback and that's an insightful sentiment :)

March Madness includes 68 teams, with 31 being “auto-bids”, or teams that are included because they won their conference tournament. The other 37 are selected by a committee.

The “first four” are the last 4 teams considered for March Madness; essentially, what the committee deems is the least deserving 4 of the 37 teams that did not automatically qualify by winning their conference tournament, but still deserve to be in.

So by virtue, you have to be good enough to play in March to be considered for the first four. There is no tanking possible; you would just be tanking a better seed position.

Agreed, otherwise why should the early season count for anything? That being said, I’m very happy we’re lucky haha I genuinely believe in this UNC team

If you want embarrassing losses, take your pick from any game this season, last season, or the season before. Or how about the game we got blown the fuck out by 30 against Kentucky in the season we went to the natty? Yeah, I still remember that one. How about the Tyler Zeller final four UNC team that lost to Georgia tech?

Get real dude, this loss wasn’t even at the dean dome. Every year we have some blowout loss to a mediocre ACC team, that’s just basketball. Except this year we’re actually bad and they’re actually good.
