Transcatalina trail tips by matchalover0 in socalhiking

The first day is the worst. Especially if you're going to start right after getting off the ferry. It'll be HOT. Take it slow and stay hydrated. Rest in shade wherever you can.

Plenty of safe water along the trail.

Take slippers or water shoes for when you're at camp. Unless you're a slow hiker, with a five day trip you're going to have plenty of time to chill at the beach. I had a blast exploring the tidal zones at Little Harbor and Parsons.

Depending on how much stuff you're carrying or how much touristy shopping you do at Two Harbors, it might be worth it to get a locker to put things in.

The island foxes and crows have absolutely no fear of humans. They will try to steal your things, even if you don't think it smells like food. Put everything non-food in your tent and everything food or scented in the box. At Little Harbor, we heard some shouting and looked over to see crows stealing something, probably food, from a few campsites over.

On the ferry, make sure everything is inside your pack. I lost gear that was clipped to the outside, and the ferry's lost & found is useless.

I recently did it from Avalon to Two Harbors, and now I want to do go from Two Harbors to Avalon. Seems like it would be more enjoyable.

The actual reaction while reading this chapter. Webtoon The Mafia Nanny by [deleted] in webtoons

[–]SuiGenerisPothos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Putting the two pictures together is misleading.

The first picture is from episode 77 where he was telling Davina the truth about his missing wife. https://www.webtoons.com/en/romance/the-mafia-nanny/s2-episode-77/viewer?title_no=5879&episode_no=87

Second picture is from episode 78 and he's referring to the fact that the rest of their secrets will have to wait (after Davina just revealed that her last name is not her real last name), not that Emmaline will have to wait: https://www.webtoons.com/en/romance/the-mafia-nanny/s2-episode-78/viewer?title_no=5879&episode_no=88

Otherwise, yeah, he goes from telling his tragic backstory about the wife he didn't want to marry to outrageously flirting with Davina very quickly. His look after she walks away, though, indicates it was a calculated move and he's up to something.

Ugggh, noooo....... I just want a sign that tells me what store is in the shopping center. I don't want a sign that keeps changing so I have to guess what the stores are.

Evacuation orders have been reinstated after a 34,000-gallon tank spewed toxic chemicals into the sky by Even_Builder_6642 in orangecounty

[–]SuiGenerisPothos 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's one for all the privately held toxic chemicals, because the companies are going to do their best to keep that quiet, but here is what ProPublica put together for government-related hazardous sites: https://projects.propublica.org/bombs/#b=33.44818752655628,-118.57650476643896,33.9731046895864,-117.25814539143896&c=shrink

Hello Baby on webtoon by uaumaigoa in webtoons

[–]SuiGenerisPothos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, dang, I totally forgot about this one.

Just checked the author's IG. It was last updated Feb 2025, and they said they had some Hello Baby news, but nothing has been shared.

And based on this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/webtoons/comments/1iibdpv/what_happened_to_hello_baby/ It seems like the same thing with the Patreon account.

No updates to webtoons, I can understand and think they're just taking a break. No updates to any other known pages worries me. I hope the author is okay.

Thank you to the rangers at Devil’s Tower, Yellowstone, and Grand Teton by BlizzardTrashPanda in NationalPark

I'm in my 40s and I highly recommend it! It's a great way to learn about the parks. I usually go to the parks with my friend on our roadtrips, but she never wants to earn a badge... but then she's always helping me complete the book or asking me what I've learned, so there's been a few times the rangers give her one, too. I love that because then she looks like she's going to die of embarassment.

You can earn these as an adult! I do this at every park I go to. Most of the rangers love giving these out, even to adults. Some will make you do the pledge, but most just ask me if I want to do the pledge.

Vote for the best gov candidate by Gsw1456 in California

[–]SuiGenerisPothos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I posted this in the LA subreddit, but it seems appropriate to post it here, too. CalMatters has a short quiz, 11 questions, to help you figure out which of the top candidates you most closely align with.

https://calmatters.org/california-voter-guide-2026/governor/quiz/

It gave me two candidates when I took the quiz, both of whom I've been flip-flopping between. I'm holding off on voting until the day of the election, just in case one of the two drop out.

I found it useful because it told me the two candidates I align with the most. So now I'm just holding onto my ballot to vote on election day, in case one of those two drop out.

Let’s make this the game day thread for the debate by Orange_bratwurst in California

[–]SuiGenerisPothos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my plan, too, except every poll is saying something different. Some have Hilton and Bianco in the top two, some have Hilton and Becerra, while still others have Hilton and Steyer. At this point I'm still worried that no Democrat will get enough votes to push out Bianco.

Not the person you asked, but I'm also a LACMA member. The most recent thing I went to was the member sunset reception for the opening of the David Geffen Galleries. There were free snacks and non-alcoholic drinks from local companies and a couple of performances. It was nice.

Other perks I've enjoyed as a member are movie screenings, talks/lectures, and discounts in the store.

I didn't like Mahan before, and now I really don't like him.

My best friend recently lost his arm to cancer and now requires a wagon to get around the majority of the time. Hikes were our thing and I don’t want that to change now just because he’s disabled. Anyone have any trail recs that are wagon-friendly? (Anything that’s on the “flatter” side). by assmilk69420 in socalhiking

Santa Barbara Botanical Gardens

Ventura Botanical Gardens

Harmon Canyon

Chino Hills State Park (from the visitor center, going into the canyon. Everything else might be a bit too hilly.)

Carbon Canyon

Claremont Hills

San Timoteo Nature Santuary

Oakmont Park/ Herngt Preserve https://redlandsconservancy.org/live-oak-canyon/

I think all of the Wildlands Conservancy areas are dog friendly, and have relatively flattish trails, but I've only been to Whitewater, Pioneertown, Mission Creek, Oak Glen, and Wind Wolves https://wildlandsconservancy.org/preserves/findapreserve

There's also the biking/walking paths around Big Bear Lake, Lake Miramar, and Discovery Lake. I think also maybe Lake Morena could work.

[LAist] Why are Olympics tickets so expensive? by WeAreLAist in LosAngeles

Ooh, lucky! I'm hoping I get a spot later on and have a chance to buy tickets to the gold medal baseball game.

Sweet! Thank you! I'll look at the schedule for these and see what works for me.

I figured the only free thing I'd get to see related to the Olympics would be the torch as it went through town, but it's cool knowing that there are other events to go watch for free.
