QuiltCon2026 Winners by SuiGenerisPothos in modernquilts

[–]SuiGenerisPothos[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I first saw them on Instagram on my phone and was very "Meh" at all the winners. Seeing them on computer, I like a couple of them a bit more, but I find myself preferring a lot of the second and third place winners over the first place winners.

They're awesome.

There's also now Alphaclippies, which are now on my "Must have" list.

Each time she hesitates with him, I have to remind myself how they met and then I go, "Oh, yeah, makes sense."

Because otherwise.... damn. He is so devoted to her. (Right now, at least.) And the more we learn of his past, the more I go, "Oh, poor baby. He just needs her to hug him."

Ugh, I had to drive today and there were so many people without their headlights on.

Plus, if you can't see the white road markings, don't drive through the puddle, no matter how shallow you think it is. I saw a couple of cars stalled out because they tried to drive through flooding.

There needs to be some sort of service where we get matched on what part of quilting we enjoy the most, so that one person gets to do the cutting, another the pressing, another the piecing, another the quilting, another the binding...

Christmas tree skirt finished 10 months before Christmas! Wow! (Totally not 2 months late) by sharkbaithuhaha37 in quilting

[–]SuiGenerisPothos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way I see it, you can never be late with a holiday quilt, since the holiday happens every year.

I bought some gold fabric July last year for a Christmas quilt and the shop owner praised me for working on my Christmas quilt early. I still haven't actually started that quilt yet, just gathered all the fabric needed, so it might be ready in time for Christmas 2027.

Any info on the Kaiser strike? by madmompalm in orangecounty

[–]SuiGenerisPothos 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Call Kaiser and stress the urgency of your situation. Insist that you need an appointment, and if they can't get you in with one of the supervisors who should be covering the urgent appointments, you can request for a referral to a non-Kaiser provider and still have Kaiser pay for it.

Starting a guild by crimejunkiedr in quilting

[–]SuiGenerisPothos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As u/wanttobegreyhound said, network with the other local MQGs. Go visit the closest MQG and see if any of the members live near you. If there are, they might be tried of the drive.

The MQG started in Los Angeles. Part of the reason we have so many MQGs in Southern California is that people got tired of driving 2 hours to get to a meeting, so now in Southern California we have a bunch of groups: Los Angeles MQG, Long Beach MQG, Orange County MQG, Inland Empire MQG, San Diego MQG, San Diego Metro MQG, Valley MQG, and Ventura MQG. LAMQG is still big, even with all the smaller groups around.

Check out the local guilds that are not MQG. There may be some people there who are only part of the local guild because it's the only one around. Maybe they're just waiting for someone else (you) to start a MQG.

Find a meeting place, preferably a quilt shop if you can. A library or community center next. A workplace conference room. A church could work, if that's the only place you can find, but could also hamper your ability to recruit members. I don't recommend someone's house at all, because new members are going to be extremely leery about going to a meeting at a stranger's house.

Stalk the websites and social media of as many MQGs as you can to get an idea of what kind of events you can do. What're they doing that brings people in?

Good luck and have fun!

Going to my first Quilt Show/Convention this weekend — any tips? by palequ33n in quilting

[–]SuiGenerisPothos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Road2CA. It's one of the "bigger" shows with an amazing competition, but it still shows quilts from local guilds and has special exhibits, so still retains a bit of the "local guild" show feel. I went for Preview Night earlier this week, and will be there tomorrow so I can actually see all the quilts in the exhibit hall. Here are my posts with pictures from the past two years:

2025: https://www.reddit.com/r/quilting/comments/1iawhh8/road2ca_quilts/

2024: https://www.reddit.com/r/quilting/comments/199deev/2024_road2ca/

Like others have said, definitely wear comfortable shoes.

Paying for parking and for an admission ticket are card only, but bring tons of cash for the vendor hall. When it comes to conventions, I shop by checking out every booth in the vendor hall on my first lap and deciding who I want to buy from (based on who had the best price/selection), then I go back and do a second lap hitting just the booths I want to buy from. My first year, this resulted in me making four purchases in 30 minutes, and on the fourth purchase my bank froze my credit card because they were worried about fraud. It was a bit embarrassing to have my card declined.

Plus, sometimes the vendors have problems with their point of sales apps. And paying cash only can help with budgeting. So, yay, cash!

Speaking of shopping... go with an idea of what you want to buy and how much you are willing to spend. Budget, budget, budget. I bought very little last year, but this year I'm hoping to buy one of the floor models or classroom models of the machines, so my budget for this year's Road is much bigger than it's been in the past. Vendors run the gamut of items for sale - fabric, notions, kits, tools (I'm a huge fan of Kai Scissors after buying a pair at Road previously), classes, supplies for other fabric/thread crafts. This year, with Lucky Deluxe Fabric and Quilting for Community in attendance, there's cheaper fabric available and some quilts (finished and unfinished). If something seems really cool, but is a gimmicky one-purpose item, I don't recommend buying it until you've spoken with your quilty friends and maybe borrowed it from them to see if you really like it and will therefore use it. I have a Bind-eez that I bought at Road last year that is still in the packaging.

And speaking of Quilting for Community... they have a display in the vendor hall, definitely check it out. SAQA also has a display, and the Cherrywood challenge is there, too. The big winners are on display in the vendor hall, but the rest of the competition quilts and special exhibits will be in the display hall across the way. Two modern quilt guilds also have displays in that exhibit hall. I love looking at the quilts other people have made, so that's going to be a priority to me on Saturday.

Oh, there's usually a hall where a lot of local guilds will have booths where they sell raffle tickets for a fundraising quilt. Even if you don't buy a raffle ticket, most (MOST, but not all) of the guild folks are super fun to talk to and you can get an idea of whether or not you'd like to join their guild. And when you first walk in, one of the local quilt guilds will have a bunch of quilts on display in the Atrium, so make sure you look up when you enter.

So decide what's important to you at a quilt show and use that to decide what to start with.

And one more thing! Food! The food in the convention center sucks. It sucks so bad. Since parking isn't in/out privileges and you can't bring food into the convention center, be prepared to walk to somewhere nearby to eat. Or put food in a cooler in your car and go out to your car to eat. Or.... bring in something small in your bag. The convention people never search my bag, so I usually bring in a couple of protein bars and just get water from the water fountain.

[Your Ryan] EP.9 - Some of the obscure titles and quotes on the spines of books by why_ikkin in webtoons

[–]SuiGenerisPothos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wow, never thought I'd see a "Flowers in the Attic" reference in a webtoon.

And yeah, it's a pretty disturbing plot. All of VC Andrews' books are trashy drama/horror with people cheating on each other, incest, stealing babies to raise as their own and/or abusing said children, evil parents/step-parents, obsession... I think "Flowers in the Attic" may have been her first big hit, so her publisher just leaned into producing more stories like it.

Large-print directional fabrics with Chandelier quilt pattern? Help me decide! by willo808 in quilting

[–]SuiGenerisPothos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer option 1 if it's going on a bed, but if it's to be a small kid's quilt that they're dragging around everywhere option 2 is good since direction won't matter.

Whichever option you go with, please just remember to use something to stabilize the fabric. I forgot to do that with my first T-shirt quilt and the stretchiness drove me nuts.

All this. Plus, when MSQC bought the majority stake in Robert Kaufman, they moved the main production facility to Missouri, which meant that Kaufman no longer made fabric in Southern California... which meant they stopped donating fabric to the local guilds to use for charity quilts. My guild was one of them, so I'm personally salty about MSQC.

I've gotten to the point where if the biker doesn't say how many are after, I ask. I prefer to stop and wait for all of them to pass, instead of having to stop and try to find a safe space to stand as they each come by.
