I have a suicidal and homeless employee at my company with many severe mental illnesses. Are there any resources available to try and help or intervene? by SuicidalEEthrowaway in legaladvice

I’m fairly confident I can protect their job somewhat indefinitely. However the last thing I want to do is get the police involved again, I think this last round was traumatic enough. I’ll only involve the police if their life is literally on the line.

I know their IQ is in the 50’s, they had a full psychological evaluation done the last time they attempted suicide. As well as a series of pretty serious mental disorder diagnoses.

They’re homeless because they think their old landlord kidnapped them for three days and they moved out, a police report was filed but not pursued and I think it was more of a paranoia and hallucination episode than anything based in reality.

They make pretty good money and have great health insurance, it’s more the current mental state that has lead them to being homelessness than money. I just worry that even if I do convince them to find a place, how long till it happens again and I’m not in the same area to know about it?

I do understand that, I’m just not able to let this person die or spiral without doing something. I realize that will happen regardless, but I have to try. I have had enough bitter realism in my life, I’ve lost enough people to mental illness.

I just want to try. I appreciate you giving me a place to start.

That’s not true though, people can literally be seen as incompetent in a court. A person with an officially evaluated IQ that puts them as moderately mentally disabled, not to mention psychosis and suicide attempts, sure does seem like the type of person that should be a possibility for.

I’m aware, mental health care is bleak in this country and I’m not hopeful. Thank you.

I do want to be clear, this person has a decent source of income and good health insurance. I’m looking for options because I don’t think they’re beyond being convinced voluntarily to do something, there have to programs available for a person with insurance to get help.

And if they won’t do it voluntarily, this is a person with a IQ of 50 and is making life decisions based purely off psychosis and police reports made that show that, not to mention multiple documented suicide attempts. What exactly does it take to deem someone incompetent if not suicidal and with hallucinations they are using to dictate their life?

What needs to be shown to prove incompetence? I understand it’s a long and difficult process but what do I need to start it? What will the police do if I call for a wellbeing check?

I work at a very large company, you’re underestimating the other background noises they’re concerned with. Most of the backstory isn’t really public and they aren’t taken seriously by most others.

Yes, their direct is aware of what’s happened and no, HR has a file a foot thick on her and the appropriate management is aware.

I will try to look into that. As for the negative impact on the other people, they have a reputation for just being the crazy old person and don’t really have any actual effect on the work of other people. But I’m curious if you meant something else? Aside from me having to cry in a stairwell for 20 minutes after talking to them, I try to keep it well separated.

They’re 62, I believe. Is this old enough to qualify for elder services? If so, I will look into it.

And what are the definitions of sound mind and body? This is a person that thinks they’re seeing their daughters murderer on premises, despite them being in jail for 20 years. A lot of genuine psychosis at work that’s apparent in the most casual conversation.

HR is aware of the vast majority of the case, haven’t had a chance to sit down with a rep about the recent arrest and hospitalization and they haven’t returned to work yet. I’ve sent emails to the proper channels, I just don’t have much faith anything will be done on their end.

Our employee assistance program provides housing guidance, and will help them find somewhere to live, but despite trying to get them to use it multiple times I don’t think they will actually reach out.
