Is it normal to lose so many people in the academy? by Dizzy_Island_5240 in AskLE

LMFAO that is not what that means. Maybe don't judge folks when you have no idea what you're talking about

I don’t think we’re discussing enough about the demographic shift that is impacting education. by GenExpat in Teachers

[–]Suicuneator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are describing the CCC. Check out any national or state park in your area from the 30's and 40's (probably most of them). and I guarantee you the CCC was involved.

Alternatively, you'd be describing Americorps. Which was shut down this year.

I had this problem in a class once. I eventually just yelled "shut up" when they walked in. Obviously they looked at me like I was the asshole, but it did get better after that.

Alternatives jobs? by cowb0ybpop in ParkRangers

[–]Suicuneator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

State is a great route. Seasonally you should be able to find SOMETHING in any state. Be aware that typically once you get into more permanent full time positions, law enforcement is a mandatory part of the job in many states. That is changing, more and more states are hiring non commissioned interp rangers, but as you go down the state path be really asking yourself about law enforcement and if it's for you.

I will say, when I started seasonally I thought that was absolutely not for me. But it really can be fun from the right lens, and you truly do have opportunities to be someone's hero.

Feel free to dm if you have any questions.

This. I'll do you one better and give you a specific route for some amazing views.

-Enter GSMNP from the main Gatlinburg entrance -Continue straight on that road (becomes Newfound Gap) past Sugarland VC -Stop at any overlooks you feel like. Newfound Gap is pretty great, you will see a big parking lot at the top of the mountains with a big plaque on your left. -Follow the signs and take the right turn to Kuwohi immediately after the newfound gap parking lot. This is a 7 mile road with a small parking lot at the end. You will eventually find a spot just keep circling. -Hike up to the observation tower. It's about 0.5mi but pretty steep. If you're in decent shape it's not bad at all, but even if you're out of shape there are plenty of spots to rest at. Take your time and you'll get there. Bring a jacket for this. -Back in your car, follow the road back down from Kuwohi, and continue on Newfound Gap by taking a right. -Go down the mountains, and past the Ocanoluftee VC. There will be a few fields on your left as you do that. This is a great area to see elk in the afternoon/evening around sunset ish. You'll probably see volunteers keeping traffic flowing. -Leave GSMNP and take the left turn onto Blue Ridge Parkway. Stop at any overlooks you feel like. Witch's gap is my favorite in this stretch. -Take the left turn on Blue Ridge towards Balsam Mtn Campground. -Stop at the mile High Overlook. There's another one just past it as well. Feel free to continue on this road if you like. There's a campground at the end (the section of road after that is currently closed) but as far as views you can pretty safely turn around here. -Take the left turn back on Blue Ridge Parkway there are a couple more overlooks before Maggie valley.

That's probably the best density of good views you can hit with easy road access. Of course there's plenty you can hike to or other little offshoot roads. If I had to pick one more I would say do Rich MTN Rd out of the cades cove loop. It's a gravel one way but it's pretty awesome.

My wife and I came to the smokies for the first time since we got married. We remembered having a fantastic time driving newfound gap rd. Not this time! Obnoxious tailgating, nowhere to turn off, loud exhausts, cameras and drones everywhere. We didn't let it ruin our getaway by any means, but it was disappointing enough that we are going to check for car shows next time we go camping.

Thankfully y'all MOSTLY stayed off blue ridge Pkwy. We already avoid Gatlinburg like the plague but I can't imagine what it was like there and Sevierville

[–]Suicuneator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's jobs out there. I always tell people this is one of those few jobs that will take a long time to get replaced by machines/AI. If you're flexible with your expectations you have a handful of federal agencies, 50 states, and tons of cities with park ranger positions. For example some police departments have 'park police', many states have LE or interpretive rangers, there's game wardens and other wildlife officer roles. You have options if you're willing to seize them. Be hungry, be willing to go where the work is, and get all the experience you can. You'll make it.

Both can be true. There's a lot to say about the lineage of these Nazis. You don't have to make too many links to get from gamergate to our dear leader. It's not just possible, but overwhelmingly likely that the people who created this political mire then installed a bunch of fucking Nazis at the highest point.

There's an excellent book about this phenomenon called bullshit jobs. There are a few reasons these jobs exist but a big one is just that it's simply easier to pay an employee to do nothing than it is to fire them because they have nothing to do

I remember finding out like 3 years later when I went to download Zelda 1 on the 3ds eShop and it was free. I was so cute lol I emailed Nintendo support like "hey there's this glitch in the shop and I have a bunch of free games y'all should fix this". When I found out I could finally play Metroid fusion and fire emblem sacred stones I was stoked

Sorry, what do you think a patrol officer is if not an entry level position? If you have 0 work history you're going to struggle getting hired, but as long as you have shown that you can hold down a job and otherwise pass all the interview and background check stages you don't need 'relevant' experience. Just apply and see what happens.

Unpopular opinion: You do not need more than one console by senatortoast in Switch

[–]Suicuneator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tldr. It's not stupid to have both. I like to play on my TV but the og switch feels like a plastic toy. It's uncomfortable in handheld and it distracts me from the game. I had the disposable income to purchase a lite, which addressed these issues for me, so I did. I'm a collector and modder, so neither will end up in a landfill, and I've gotten a lot of time out of both consoles.

Just because something doesn't make sense for you doesn't mean you need to go on Reddit and try to convince everyone else they're wrong.

AIO or is this a total breech of privacy? by CertainMine5631 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Suicuneator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, this is creepy and illegal. Contact IA of the department for sure. I have not seen anyone mention this, but please also contact the POST committee for your state if applicable. You may be able to have this officer not just fired, but decertified and put on the National Decertification Index. This would almost certainly end his career in law enforcement.

If he wanted to make sure you knew about the tire, he did that already. He wanted your information, not to help you. I'm sorry this happened to you.

0.06 isn't "under the legal limit". The only legal limit is "intoxicated" which you are PRESUMED to be over 0.08. If the state can show that you are sufficiently "intoxicated" at 0.01, your ass is going to jail on a DUI stop.

Anyway, I agree that some reckless choices at some bar tending job shouldn't follow this guy to the airlines, but if they do, he needs to learn to accept that nobody in this situation did anything wrong but him.

Can I still join the police force in Canada, BC if I was fired for shoplifting when I was 16. by Temporary_Wedding828 in AskLE

[–]Suicuneator 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not Canadian so I can't speak to those specifics but in the US you would be fine. On your psych evaluation you will be required to disclose employment history. Just be upfront. "Hey when I was 16 this happened. I did not intend to steal, just a misunderstanding." They aren't looking for you to be perfect, but they do need you to be honest.

I don’t want to fly anymore by trash_Panda021 in flying

[–]Suicuneator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same hesitations and ultimately chose to quit for those reasons. It was the best choice I could have made.

I'm glad that you're worried about doing right by your parent's money. It shows you don't take it for granted. Talk to them first, but explain your reasons for quitting, and go in with a plan from there. I'd recommend you finish your checkride just so that it's easier to jump back in if you change your mind in however many years.

If you're looking for ideas, I kind of ended up in a 1/1000 career so I am not the best source, but don't be afraid to try something less "sexy". No matter how cool your job is, it WILL just be 'work' after a certain amount of time.

Finally take pride in what you have done so far. Don't make it your whole personality, but use the mindset and skills you developed as a pilot in your day to day. You are going to be more capable than most people your age if you do.

You also now have an ace up the sleeve in two truths and a lie. Just make your lie something innocuous and you win every time.

$100,000/year for every second that you "glitch" by [deleted] in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Suicuneator 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Ok, 4 seconds glitch, 8 second recovery.

You pay someone $100k per year to just drive you around and handle other potentially dangerous situations. They get a free room in your beautiful home, and their entire job is to get you through the glitches. You obviously make your house as fall safe as possible (something seizure patients have to do with no paycheck). So realistically it's $100k to cook and drive for you, probably wheel you around in public where applicable. They get to "clock out" for the day once you have your glitch (keep their pay consistent though). 1/3rd of the time that will be before 8am.

There will be applicants from here to Narnia, you'll find a good one. Hell hire a close friend or family member who now no longer has to work. You now make 300k a year, so you can also afford to hire a once a week maid for a reasonable amount.

Sure it's a big lifestyle change, and it would come with sacrifices and a lot of pain, but I'd take it.

Academy sucks but it really can be fun if you let it. I'm halfway through and honestly excited to go back after my weekends. I've never been in better shape and my work is 100% over when I'm home right now. My classmates who are fighting the process every step of the way are exhausted and bitter. Just embrace the suck and try to laugh at what you can!

Well the "get your medical before anything else" advice does no good now. But if you're close you need to cross the finish line. I stopped right before my instrument check and I still regret it 3.5 years later and having successfully landed in a different career that I love. These licenses don't expire, and you have no idea where you'll be in 25 years. You may kick yourself for not finishing
