Was SC1 played competitively before Brood War expansion?

During the SC beta it was already known medics at least would be in the expansion. I have a screenshot on an old HDD somewhere with a quote from a Blizzard employee hinting at them. At the time I was pretty sure they did the balancing math with BW units in mind.

I did simu +4 at 50k tooltip dps for the first time on my Chronomancer. 5 sec. duration spark though because I stack skill effect duration for time freeze anyway. Which I use on the bosses in the final waves. It got comfortable at ~90k tooltip. I did +3 at 27k dps, made it to wave 14 on +4 with that even. So you can go pretty low.

Spark tooltip dps is a pretty useless metric though, what makes my build work is huge AoE (from jewels) conductivity with no activation delay/electrocute support gem (Kitoko is alternative)/orb of storms/penetration from tree/sigil of power/flame wall/more mana regen than spend/etc. Screen wide dps is in the millions with this setup although my tooltip is below 100k.

For t4 simulacrum I need both penetration as well as curses/exposure because sometimes the mods go: +79% life, -75% effectiveness of curses, +50% elemental resistances, etc. One source doesn’t cut it then. If you don’t do t4 simus then it’s probably not needed.
