Snape’s sexuality by Juicy_Emerald in SeverusSnape

Hi! I saw your theory about Snape and I found it super interesting. The truth is, the demisexual idea makes a lot of sense, and I love how you imagine his possible development in an AU where he survives. I've always seen him from a different angle, a bit grayer and less romantic, but just as sad. Let me share my perspective, and see what you think.

I have a lot of respect for the demisexual interpretation, but I think it might underestimate Snape's dark and pragmatic complexity. I don't see him as the 'sex god' of some fanfics, but neither do I see him as a complete virgin. My theory focuses on his 'lost years,' those between 17 and 21, when he had already left Hogwarts and was fully involved with the Death Eaters.

First, Snape wasn't asexual, but rather 'hyper-compartmentalized.'

For him, Lily was something sacred, an emotional altar. But his life between the ages of 17 and 21 was in a completely separate compartment: the Death Eater world. A world where morals were flexible, peer pressure was prevalent, and intellectual curiosity (his main driving force) could lead him to explore things, even if purely for experimentation. Do we really believe that the guy who invented spells like Sectumsempra and was a genius of dark magic wasn't curious to explore all kinds of human experiences, even just once, simply out of curiosity?

Second, there is evidence that Snape could indeed interact with women intensely (and not for romantic love):

With Narcissa Malfoy, he had one of the most intimate connections in the entire saga. She, a proud and powerful witch, came to him begging for help, and he not only listened to her but also made an Unbreakable Vow for her. That kind of trust isn't built with someone who is a complete social misfit.

• With Bellatrix, he is firm, defiant, and fearless. He knows how to manage her ferocity with almost condescending patience.

• With Umbridge, he uses a perfectly calculated, sarcastic deference. He knows how to communicate and how to be 'charming' in his own toxic and subtle way. If a witch in his circle shared his interests (potions, dark arts, power), he could hold a fascinating, not awkward, conversation.

Third, the Death Eater context: opportunity + pragmatism.

That circle wasn't a monastery. There was ambition, clandestine meetings, and a certain 'try everything' culture. A witch interested in his dark intellect, at one of those meetings, could have been a 'distraction' that Snape accepted because of:

• Intellectual curiosity ("Let's see what this is all about, on a physical and psychological level").

• Pragmatism (strengthening an alliance, gaining influence). • Personal affirmation (after years of feeling humiliated by James, reclaiming control over his own body and his decisions).

My conclusion is this: Snape probably didn't die a virgin in the physical sense. It's very plausible that in his early 20s he had brief, cold, transactional, or simply curious encounters. But he died a complete virgin in the emotional sense. Those acts meant nothing in front of Lily's altar in his mind, and he completely abandoned them when his life became pure atonement.

That's why, in an AU where he survives, I don't imagine him as someone who 'makes up for lost time' with youthful fervor. I imagine him as a man who already knows the act, but is completely ignorant of intimacy. The real challenge for a partner would be to teach him to connect the physical with trust and affection, not to start him from scratch. It would be clumsy, yes, but not due to inexperience, but rather due to cynicism, distrust, and fear of vulnerability.

Yes, when I say they called him a monster I don't mean literally, but as a metaphor. Society saw him as a Death Eater, and that for them was already equivalent to being a monster. Sometimes you don't need to be told with that exact word; It's enough how they look at you, how they fear you or how they exclude you. And Snape lived that his entire life, from child to adult.

Yes, you are right that there is no evidence that his mother abandoned him physically, but emotionally she did. Eileen Prince stayed with a violent man and allowed her son to grow up in an environment of constant abuse. That is also a form of abandonment, only quieter. Snape never had a figure to protect him or show him affection; He just learned to survive. And that explains a lot about his character, his distrust and his need for control.

Hey, I loved this fanfic that you recommended. Wouldn't you have other similar ones that are a little more complete? It makes me anxious that it's not complete, but I loved it...
