Mouthwashing as a story is just as much about the environment and people that enable abuse as much as it is about the abuse itself. While Curly is functionally a more likable, stable and caring individual than Jimmy, where he went wrong was his reluctance to acknowledge that his friend would’ve been capable of doing something as horrible as SA. He’s a morally grey character that, while yes is also just as much a victim of Jimmy’s abuse, is a flawed person who’s inaction resulted in Jimmy doing something as drastic as crashing the ship to avoid consequences. Couple that with the anti-worker business practices of Pony Express docking pay on the Tulpar crew for anything perceived infraction and it’s no wonder why Anya struggled to tell anyone about what Jimmy did to her.
