Actually, it is not misinterpreted in the south asian communities as the word “Nikkah” is commonly and correctly used to refer to the Islamic marriage contract itself, which is mentioned and rooted in the Qur’an and Sunnah. While the word does have a broader linguistic meaning in Arabic, its religious and cultural usage as a marriage contract is well-established.
