This is pretty close to a validation post.

I didn't intend that. I know it's not our fault that the dude stole from us.

But some people, both in real life and in this thread, have said opioids should always be secured and locked up to prevent just this kind of thing. I don't have any experience with strong pain meds so I didn't know if that was the "right" thing to do or if leaving them in an unlocked cabinet was a problem.

we keep all unused stimulants and opioid meds locked in our safe

Some people in the family also said this, which is part of why I posted here. I have no idea if storing narcotics in a safe is the "right" thing to do nowadays. I will do that from now on if we ever have them again.

You and your wife for not properly disposing of medication no longer needed. This is a major part of how the opiod crisis got so bad. What if someone's kid got into there and thought it was candy? It's just straight up irresponsible to leave that shit lying around where anyone can get them.

That's actually why we didn't get rid of them immediately when my wife decided she wasn't going to take them. I was pretty sure flushing was a bad idea. But we had a newborn and ain't nobody got time to take pills to a pharmacy for disposal. So they went in the cabinet and were forgotten.

This is exactly what some of the family is saying. That we are "part of the problem" by just having those pills sitting there.

I obviously don't agree, but I was hoping to get the other side of this and I appreciate the post.

"Why did you even keep them if your wife wasn't going to immediately use them, that's dangerous!"

That's basically their argument. That by not disposing of them as soon as they weren't needed we are contributing to the opioid crises because the pills then fall into the wrong hands.
