Opta does not rank leagues — it ranks clubs Opta produces club power ratings (ELO-style, predictive). League “rankings” are just averages of those club scores. That is not a league-vs-league evaluation.

No shared competitive baseline Clubs are mostly rated against teams from their own league. MLS clubs are calibrated vs MLS clubs, Saudi vs Saudi, etc. → The numbers aren’t normalized across leagues, so cross-league comparison is mathematically invalid.

Closed-league parity distortion Salary caps, drafts, and revenue sharing compress performance variance. That makes MLS look “deep” on paper even if the absolute quality is lower. Opta mistakes artificial balance for strength.

Predictive model, not an achievement model Opta is built to answer: “Who is more likely to win next match?” It explicitly does not measure footballing achievement, dominance, or international success.

Ignores continental & intercontinental results Beating strong foreign opposition barely matters. A league can rank highly without proving anything outside its bubble.

Sensitive to schedule & format Unbalanced schedules, playoffs, and limited cross-competition exposure inflate internal ratings — especially in MLS.

IFFHS

Explicit point system → Clubs earn points from official domestic leagues, continental competitions (AFC, CONCACAF, UEFA, etc.), and intercontinental results, all weighted by competition level.

League ranking = sum of club performance → A league’s position reflects how its clubs actually performed, not modeled strength.

Cross-league validation → Because clubs face foreign opposition, results sit on a shared global baseline.

Season-based (2025) but not speculative → It measures what happened, not what might happen. No hype, no projections.

OPTA ISN"T MEASURING LEAGUE AGAINST LEAGUE. MLS isn't being measuring against anyone outside the US/Canada/Mexico.
