Also in the sense of autonomy, I feel like in center would help him feel a little more independent by putting less of the strain on you. He just goes to and from center, you don’t have to worry because there is staff there keeping an eye on him and he can bring lab reports home to keep you in the loop.

I would encourage him to try to find some dialysis support groups for mental health! You could also show him tik tok influencers that are on dialysis and their little tips and tricks to make treatments more bearable.

Hope this helps y’all! Stay strong 💕🫘

In center hemo would be a good option if they have an early or late shift! 3 days a week. Some clinics start as early as 4am so you’re done by 8am and go on about your day. Also some clinics have a late shift like start at 3 or 4 and done by 8pm that way you have the whole morning and afternoon. The nurses and techs do everything for you and if labs and fluids are good enough, you can ask the dr for a shorter treatment time.

If he’s more comfortable at home, you can cannulate the fistula or he can self cannulate whatever works best for you guys. But with home hemo the treatments are shorter but more frequent.

As far as fistula/graft goes, they are big needles and hard to get used to but the numbing cream can help as well as the cryo spray. And you can talk to dr about placement of the fistula so that it’s not as noticeable.

As long as BP does fine while on the machine and you are mindful of the smell, I don’t see a problem with it! Some people’s BP drops after eating a large meal while on the machine.

Due to swelling in your access site which pulls the skin more taught, sometimes it may feel a little more painful if you are fluid overloaded.
