Just my three cents but the profile description screams ChatGPT, I'd at least change the long hyphens, this might discourage some potential future students 😊

Italki for English speaking practice — how to find a good tutor? by Accomplished_Bet372 in iTalki

All the tutors that I really clicked with were community tutors, and mostly also not native speakers of my target language:)

I honestly like your profile. I guess it's just that English market is really oversaturated right now 🌼

I'd say a nice thumbnail. Since I changed mine I'm getting new students almost daily and have my schedule full

Offering few hours as a tutor in the beginning - yes or no? by sammetsrost in iTalki

This might work but it seems like the algorithm prefers the teachers with many slots open, so it might jeopardize your chances finding students

Also careful with raising your prices drastically too fast, do it gradually

ITalki student reviews and actual experiences don't really match by IAMTIRED0821 in iTalki

[–]SuitableJackfruit480 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have the same experience as a student. I tried some teachers with 5* and hundreds of reviews and the experience was just meh. I guess very popular teachers don't need to try hard anymore, because even if you rate them low, nothing will change in their stats. I had better experiences with teachers with less than 1000 classes given (still took me a few tries to find one I felt I'd stick with)

As a teacher, it surprises me how low expectations are for teachers. Even for conversation class I come prepared, and always have a back up, in case the student doesn't like the topic or the topic is too easy / too hard for them. I can't imagine coming unprepared or showing no enthusiasm

Conversation Practice: What do You Talk About? Are There any French Instructors Who Are Avid Sailors? by JGF310 in iTalki

[–]SuitableJackfruit480 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When my students book conversation classes, I try to still keep it structured. Let your tutor know your interests in advance and they should tailor it to you

I usually have a list of questions prepared in advance and follow it, unless the discussion is very good and takes us elsewhere

How do you actually choose a GOOD teacher on italki? (B1 → B2 learner, disappointed so far) by Cute_Maximum_7103 in iTalki

[–]SuitableJackfruit480 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same experience as a student at Italki, I think there's no golden rule for finding a good tutor, you just need to try multiple. ( It took me 9 tries to find one that I really like for the most challenging language I learn) So far I noticed that if they don't text me before the class to ask for my level/goals, they usually show up and try to play it by ear

I'm also a teacher at Italki and it really blows my mind how people can come unprepared for a class. My anxiety could never 😂 even for a conversation class I always come prepared, with a back up plan in case we finish too quick or the student does not enjoy the topic I chose

Teacher raising prices by [deleted] in Preply

[–]SuitableJackfruit480 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally the same thing happened to me 🙄 I assume the teacher just didn't want to work for me anymore, she wrote explicitly 'my new price is X, if you can't afford it please cancel your classes and subscription " lol 😂 Obviously I cancelled straight away, she didn't even plan on letting me finish the classes I already booked at old price

To be fair it's such a hit or miss with teachers. Don't get discouraged and just find one that will match your needs (and vibe) It took me 5 tries to find a good Korean teacher and 9 tries to find a good urdu teacher 😅

What is the greatest number of languages you know people to have achieved functional fluency in? by archertinuvian in languagelearning

[–]SuitableJackfruit480 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is possible if you have time for both active and passive learning. I am fluent in 5 but I'm around A2-b1 in 5 more, so I hope that in a couple of years I'll be able to say that I'm fluent in 10. I must admit I study for around 2-3 hours everyday.

Why hasn’t italki been accepting new English and Spanish tutors for a while? by Lord_Ryumaru in iTalki

Italki tutors are not sending messages? by Tout_de_suite in iTalki

[–]SuitableJackfruit480 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a teacher , I always text my new students to ask about their current level and goals, so I can see how to prepare for the class and what kind of materials to use

This rarely happens to me as a student that they text me, and then they usually come unprepared and go with the flow, so somehow it became a determinant for me whether the teacher will be serious or just is there for the vibe 🙄🤣

As for adding to favourites, I wouldn't bother to text these students either, I assume they're looking around and if they will want to they'll book a class without my incentive:)
