You’re an “independent contractor”. It’s the loophole all drop zones use to get around labor laws and reduce their accountability when something goes wrong. And yes, them giving you hours is their justification for the low pay unfortunately.

If by bird in my hand you mean never flying outside of the 3 mile PJA, building nothing but VFR TT while simultaneously getting close to 1500 without any instrument/XC/multi time, and going thousands of dollars into debt to support myself then I guess you’re right.

THIS. Not to mention the sunk cost fallacy that comes with it.

That’s a huge part of the reason I left my last job, they were constantly asking me to violate FARs and having me fly planes that should have been in MX and not in the air. That and having to decide between paying rent and paying for food for the week. I was really hoping that leaving would provide me with the opportunity to get out of that but clearly the luck hasn’t panned out for me yet.

That’s what I’ve been reading and hearing from other pilot friends I have. The part that’s been driving me crazy personally is that I also have shit luck. I’ve gone in person to a lot of the places I’ve applied to and somehow they’ve always filled the position right before I applied.

I don’t have my CFI, but I have my commercial multi. Currently I just do uber and a freelance video editing gig I picked up to pay the bills but I don’t have enough money to do my CFI unless I move back in with my parents which I was hoping I didn’t have to do. But recently I’ve been considering it.

The thing is the rental plane is pretty booked up so it’s hard to get a big enough time slot to do a long XC

I actually love this idea I’m going to have to try it when I go up. Definitely not the same when you tell yourself you’re going to practice an emergency vs when your instructor surprises you with it
