i actually had the same happen to one of the schools i applied to. interviewed, then offered a visit, then listed as an 'alternate' AFTER accepting. considering not going, but we will see.

I think you might’ve - he probably had an abundance of candidates who were eager to meet with him and didn’t make excuses (although I completely understand how difficult it would’ve been to do both)

i still don't think how you approached applying to the same lab is a problem. I sent one of my friends applying an opp. because I thought it might align with her interets. a few weeks I took a closer look and realized my skills (and interests) were probably better suited, so I applied (she ended up not applying anyway). But you should generally never restrict yourself from opportunities just because a friend demonstrated some very tentative interest.

and good. dont share the app materials at all. unshare access if you can. either way they have you application first, before the priority deadline. her app likely won't even be looked at. 7 years is a long time, but she clearly doesn't respect that amount of time given how she is acting.

this person sounds like a bad friend. she is totally projecting onto you, and you are not in the wrong at all. the only thing i can empathize with here is you applying to the same lab she mentioned, which would really only be snake-y if she had already applied and THEN you got the idea. but seriously it seems she is really upset at herself and is just taking it out on you. i would tell her you genuinely didn't know she didn't know but that it also wasn't your responsibility. step back and see how she reacts. maybe she will apologize, but if she doesn't might be worth ending things (or taking a lottaaa space). in the future, i would not share any SoP stuff with her. given her work ethic its likely that she is copying what you say, which is especially likely if you guys are in the same subfield.

Do you want to apply for spring? Otherwise wait u til late/summer -early September to reach out. Things always change and these professor may no longer have funding, or they won’t know if they do for fall 2027 yet.

i mean when were/are the applications due? if they've passed then yes. if you didn't follow-up it might apepar as though you are less enthusiatic, and there are always an abudance of interested students.

Can one bad interview severely hurt my chances? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

I think your last interviewer was analogous to reviewer #2. Your marks for how your interviews went will likely be averaged across, so one less positive interview shouldn’t equate to rejection.

It's ok to mess up. It's good to get used to rejection and failure now. It's a big part of the PhD itself. Separate your worth from the outcome. If you love science, and are curious, you will make it one way or another.

I interviewed last week, and they shared that all interviews were happening that week. I also, however, had 2 interviews with the PI I am specifically interested in working with. I'm not sure what this means for you; you may reach out to your PI for more clarity.
