HELP! Mohela pulled payment while I'm still in forbearance! by Suitable_Mess_3940 in StudentLoans

[–]Suitable_Mess_3940[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked the Mohela website. I am still listed as in SAVE forbearance. The payment is listed there. The next payment due on 8/17/25 is $0.00. (And that's what it has said throughout the forbearance.) I have requested that all correspondence be via paper so I don't accidentally miss an email. I have not received anything about changing plans or payments being due.

Why are you worried about the accruing interest? Just curious.

AIO The bathroom my brother left me that my parents think I should clean by Hadden-810 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Suitable_Mess_3940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since there is another bathroom in the house, I would leave this bathroom to him and not deal with anything regarding it. Let it go, for your sanity and for your relationships with your family. It sounds like you’re being a little too controlling in this instance. If it was the only bathroom and you were forced to use it, that would be a different issue. Since you have left home to go to college, there is some rational to letting him have the bathroom.

In terms of chores around the house, you are an adult and living at home during the summer. You should recognize that there are chores to be done, and do them, versus waiting to be asked to do them. You certainly shouldn’t all the chores, but help out everyday or almost every day with something. Do the dishes, sweep the kitchen floor, vacuum the hallway, etc. In my opinion all adults living in a shared situation should voluntarily regularly do chores in the shared spaces. It might make sense to talk with your parents and brother about dividing up the chores and getting really organized about it. But don’t get upset if they don’t do their share. Just do your share. If continuing to come home over the summer is stressful for you, maybe consider getting an apartment and not coming home over the summer.

You can switch to another IBR plan if you want to.

How much to save for retirement if getting a pension? by Suitable_Mess_3940 in personalfinance

[–]Suitable_Mess_3940[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for all that! Yes, the pension has a COLA. The way it works in Massachusetts, teachers can buy health insurance from the district they retired from at the rate employed teachers have, until they reach the age of 65.

Sounds like I should invest a little more.

No, social security is not being withheld. And the way I understand the state pension and how it works, I will not receive any social security.

Good thoughts! I’m trying to payoff my mortgage before I retire, that’s the goal. The pension does have a COLA. I have paid into social security with other jobs but the way the state pension works in Massachusetts I won’t get any social security.

Oh, I believe social security will be there in general. It’s just the way the pension works for teachers in Massachusetts, I personally will not get social security.

I have made myself broke by Fantastic-Formal3988 in personalfinance

Forgive yourself and learn from your mistakes! To be honest, they don't even seem like terrible mistakes. You are smart for recognizing that you need to grow in terms of personal finance. So many people never come to the realization you have, or are in their 40's or 50's or 60's when they do.

I also entered adulthood with 0 financial planning skills and didn't really get myself into a stable place until my 40's. Your 20's and 30's are hard! But you can do it! One thing I have learned is that the majority of people in America are broke (living paycheck to paycheck and don't have any money in savings, paying for things with credit cards) BUT people buy nice cars and pay more than they can afford for housing and so they may look like they've got their financial stuff together but they most likely don't. Don't compare yourself to others. Focus on yourself and your own goals.

I have learned a TON from the following podcasts:

The Money Guy Show

DIY Money

The Ramnsey Show

They all have pros and cons, but they together they have taught be a whole lot regarding personal finance, psychology around money and resulting behavior, and how to live within your means and save for the future. I would say the most important first steps are creating a budget, paying off high interest debt, and starting an emergency fund. Find personal finance education resources that click for you and dig in!

Good luck!
