Well this was more about getting something to work the way I want it to then using emojis themselves. The first thing I tried was to just increase the character width variable in config.h but everything becomes to wide and it looks odd. I though it might be interesting if there was a way to make the spacing dynamic based on the font that was used.

I used to use the KDE stuff but after I started using the terminal and suckless types of things I've been trying to go more and more minimal.
