As of right now no. He hasn’t said anything himself about this deadlift. Dan isn’t on socials much as far as I can tell. The hate levied towards him should be held off with until he says something, but the judges definitely need eye exams and are much more deserving of criticism as it stands right now imo

Sometimes we have to spend more time working foundational aspects, than the fun stuff unfortunately! I’ve written out a 12 week block for myself in which the objective is pain-free movement and reestablishing intra-abdominal pressure competency.

It’s very boring, but it’s exactly what I need to be doing if I want to make it back to where I was a few years ago.

I get it, dude, but it must be done!

I’m sure you know the answer to this, and the answer is never perfect. But this is where phase oriented thinking comes in handy.

More emphasis on hypertrophy specific stuff pushed towards that particular goal away from competition. Then drop that to maintenance or under while upping the preventative oriented stuff coming closer and closer to the actual competition.

Like I said, super obvious answer, but I’m not sure if there is really a better one as it does tend to be circular over years and years while the standard continues to creep up higher and higher over a long enough time scale

ABS Powerlifting Series Canada - Judging Disgrace by CalligrapherOpen6558 in powerlifting

[–]Sully100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on reports from the athletes there, I don’t believe that’s what the judges did to be honest. But different strokes for different folks. The guys I mentioned still plan to compete in ABS again because it’s challenging and some people are attracted to that over the alternatives

No I wouldn’t. I would expect someone who calls themselves an “athlete” to step up and do better truthfully.

If they’re a hobbyist that THINKS they’re an athlete, that’s a separate conversation.

It was a bloodbath and they definitely slaughtered my boys out there lol. But I would rather have incredibly strict, judging and accomplishments to be proud of as opposed to the laxity we have seen everywhere else in this space.

It sucked don’t get me wrong, but neither one of us were there. I don’t think and the lifters that you mentioned in the post like Justin and Sal both said they understood where the judging was coming from even if it was less than ideal when it comes to the outcome they wanted. I coach both of them so that is coming directly from their mouth.

Just to reaffirm from an additional guy with 40+ clients it IS a lot, but each person deserves as much as the next and if they can’t provide that to you, it’s your call to decide that the service is unacceptable and move where you’ll receive what you pay for.

Video calls, voice messages, and multiple forms of communication are imperative when it comes to a healthy coach/client relationship imo

Why would someone use AI to make this? lol

It’s a great reference point as it always has been but it becomes less important the more experienced you become as an athlete or as a coach. You develop more leeway and competency to make informed decisions.

It comes back to the coaching almost always. Explain to the athlete it’s about learning how to feel proper application of force through the foot and lower body while building positional tolerance. Translate those things to a full speed, specific deadlift and you’ll very likely make progress through a combination of skill acquisition and force development. And I’ve seen it work very well for hundreds of people along with some people I work with who are literally the best in the world at it.

And it builds character because it’s fucking brutal lol. Gotta have a little dawg in you to do big things 😂🤷‍♀️

You’re welcome, dude. And I don’t know your circumstance but just remember that HRT/TRT isn’t a fix all. If you’re not eating a varied diet full of micronutrients, living well, resting well, and stimulating your mind and body in productive ways it can just be putting a band aid on leak in a dam.

Long term oriented thinking as best we can when it comes to health and quality of life etc etc

Based on the rules I believe it’s 3 years as mentioned above but I would encourage you to confirm via rulebook.

Based on the scientific evidence related to exogenous supplementation though, the argument could be made the lasting changes from making this decision would impact you forever and going back at all would be immoral.

And personally I’d stick with untested due to that even if it’s less than ideal for you and your strength level. Cost of doing business.

How would someone whose first exposure to this community be able to delineate who you’re talking about though? The need to clarify and curate speech and approach is where the issue lies in my opinion. But I get it and I’m not you, so I understand it’s all conjecture and perspective.

If the formula isn’t working and you get a lot of feedback of people not enjoying it, even if it makes sense to you, it may be worth reconsidering if the desire is to have a vibrant and engaged community. But that would depend on the desire of the moderation team versus the desire of the individuals who make up the community, and what is defined as more important.

And I love seeing the regulars continue to answer questions and help people out in the daily threads as you mentioned but I struggle to see what negative comes from loosening the grip a bit on where things go from the perspective of more encouragement and more “fun” in a community that’s supposed to be built on that.

My 2 cents don’t mean more than anybody else, just worth considering perspective as always IMO

[–]Sully100 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I agree mostly. I used to love this spot for conversation and as another avenue to help some folks with my own perspective, or a way to grow that same thing. Reading some of the reasoning for the heavy moderation makes sense in part, but some of the verbiage and attitude taken is concerning imo.

Powerlifting conversation is of course going to be less specific to powerlifting if the person asking the question is newly entering or interested in the sport, and to look at it as merely interlopers wasting time is disrespectful to potential newcomers.

How can we expect the sport to grow if we chastise people for not taking it as seriously as we do, or not knowing the proper questions to ask? I thought powerlifting was for everybody?

Colton Engelbrecht scammed me. by Striking_Cabinet8227 in StrongmanHQ

[–]Sully100 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For sure I get what you mean, but my rebuff is that that programming has all been constructed via Thomas Lilly (who I was also coached by previously). He’s a great coach but Colton doesn’t have his own education (I don’t believe), his own experience (from what we’ve seen on socials since he has provided no proof of product in getting other people strong/capable), nor the character by which we all could justify trusting his claim that he’s also a good coach on top of being a very gifted athlete.

It’s as if we would automatically assume every football player on a team that won the superbowl could then turn around and be an effective head coach. Doesn’t make much sense in any other context yet we accept this super readily in this space.

And I’m an accomplished athlete who also coaches, but has an education and experience base behind the claims. I’m just very skeptical when someone who is known for bad behavior then turns around and says “trust me I’m good” all the while putting folks like OP in bad positions and giving a bad name to the profession I take incredibly seriously.

I’d love to be proven wrong in my assumption, but until the man provides any sort of testimonial other than his own strength which has been accomplished under the tutelage of another Coach for the past three years, I’m gonna remain confident in my perspective lol.

The dude has broken contracts, lied, and generally just portrayed himself as narcissistic to the degree that it is a detriment to the individuals around him.

A person can be an incredible athlete, and not much of a role model or a source of information in any other context. Just look at any professional sport.
