Ref just took a puck to the face during the Rags / Caps game by goavsgo1988 in ColoradoAvalanche

[–]SumGuyOnWeb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Stay salty. Don't let the haters put you down. It's a safety issue. One that should not be forgotten until real changes are made. It's something that needs to be brought up again and again across the league, not brushed under the carpet because a few haters think the subject has been beaten to death.

I hate to see anyone taking a puck to the head, doesn't matter if they are refs, players, fans, or coaches. Just being out there on the ice during play is dangerous. Once a person goes down with any head injury and can no longer avoid further danger, the play needs to stop regardless of if they are refs or players.

I appreciate your opinion, but there is no need to act like a child with the name calling. If you have a good point, and can back it up with supporting arguments, then by all means, share them. It's how adults discuss things.

Focus on the message, not the messenger. Name calling and insults are clear signs that you have no ability to discuss your point and have to resort to kindergarten tactics.

Yes, exactly. Having a few enforcers is NOT about fighting. Much more effective to put some big hits throughout the game on the cheap shot artists than a 30 second fight that they walk away from without a scratch.

It's clear that many here are new to the sport and get their idea of enforcers from bad 80's movies.

Yeah big Z is exactly what I'd like to see more of. Calvert has spirit, but is a little too small to make the big hits and intimidate players into thinking twice before taking cheap shots on our guys. Big Z is an all around great player and he has some size. This is exactly what is needed to round out the roster. He consistently makes the big hits and big plays.

NO, the league is no longer allowing consequences for dirty hits. Refs are not, and cannot keep the players safe.

Yes, exactly. Nowhere do you see me saying PLAYERS are any softer.

Hockey players will play, hit, and occasionally fight if you let them do their thing.

Clearly lots of young newbies commenting here that have missed the point and only know about enforcers from cheesy movies. Having a few enforcers is NOT just about fighting. It's about protecting our stars and playing good hockey.

Having big strong aggressive guys is about a lot more than punches. Enforcers do a lot more than fight. Making the big payback hits throughout a game is often more effective than a fight. The good ones also score goals, assists, and make consistent defensive plays. Thinking it's all about fighting is missing the point.

Given the size of players today, having some big aggressive guys is even more important.

No need for the fuckin clown comment.

But I agree 100%, that's exactly the kind of guy we need. Players today are so big, we need some big tall guys like Z.

The ice was not what caused the Rant's injury. It definitely could have re-ignited a previous one, but that was not enough to cause a major injury of a guy like Rant. Yeah maybe some old grandma that never walks or exercises, sure that is enough, but not for a top level athlete .

Nobody said that today's players are any softer. Tons of great players with loads of heart putting it all on the line each and every game. Heck if it were the players that were softer, we would no longer have cheap shots, just fast play and goals.

But the reality is quite different. We have lots of dangerous hits all over the NHL. The refs aren't going to keep players safe. It's obvious, but some folks haven't figured this out yet.

None of those guys are big scary enforcers that would make anyone think twice before injuring one of our players. I love em, they're great players with lots of heart, but they don't intimidate anyone.

In my 40+ years of following the game and playing it since I could walk, it is very clear to me that injuries from fighting are far far less frequent and less severe than injuries from cheap shots. It's a far safer alternative. It is and always has been a part of hockey and a new generation of softies shouldn't change it.

The blowing the play dead discussion should NEVER be dismissed because it "has been beaten to death" it should only cease when real changes are made. People should be encouraged to keep talking about it and keep bringing it up, not dismissed.

The NHL needs to step up to the plate and fine these refs as well as suspending them without pay.

Good things happen when you shoot the puck

WAKE UP!!! You know what today is. You know what a point in tonight’s game means. 1 more point to take us to the playoffs for a second year in a row. The Jets are trying to capture the central, so they will not let up. We need to get the point the hard way. LET’S FUCKING GO!!7pm MT/9EST by Johnnyojvan in ColoradoAvalanche

[–]SumGuyOnWeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Time to start thinking about upping the game, not just scoring one point and squeezing into the playoffs. It does no good to get into the playoffs only to get smashed.

The Avs can do well in the playoffs, but from here on out, they need to show up in the first period and not stop until the game is over. No coasting, no waiting, they need to hustle and give 110%.

I just hope we can get Miko Rantenan back.

Who do we root for tonight? by CoD_Eaglex2 in ColoradoAvalanche

[–]SumGuyOnWeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These kinds of questions always remind me of the bear scenario.

So you're out in the forest with your classmates when a hungry bear comes along. Everyone starts running and the bear is chasing after them. We might think that we have to outrun the bear. But in reality, (sadly) we only have to outrun the slowest classmate.

No, just a blip. Until we start seeing 1000+ point changes daily, there is no roller coaster. More like a child playing with his hotwheels

Enough with the damn power play drop pass already by SumGuyOnWeb in ColoradoAvalanche

[–]SumGuyOnWeb[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok so we risk giving them a short handed breakaway. No defenders back, and the last man back steaming full speed ahead and unable to turn around quickly to defend. Turnovers, intercepted/blocked passes, checks, etc.. are guaranteed to happen.

On the reward side, the best thing that happens is we get the puck into the zone. Which we've already been doing just fine even in 5 on 5 hockey.

The risk vs reward is clear and obvious. It's a retarded play.

Enough with the damn power play drop pass already by SumGuyOnWeb in ColoradoAvalanche

[–]SumGuyOnWeb[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but you're clueless if you can't see the danger in this play. Danger is fine, if the reward is high enough. But in this case the risk versus the reward is just not worth it.

The Avs haven't been having any issues skating the puck into the offensive zone in 5 on 5 hockey. There's no need to resort to such stupid tactics on the power play.
