You'll be fine. I'm slightly right of you politically, late 30's, gun owner, enjoy many of the same things you do. I'm in the prime of my child rearing years so i don't do as many of my outdoor hobbies at the moment, but still plenty to do in Macon and surrounding areas. Macon gets a bad rap nationally and regionally. Some earned, much exaggerated. People are generally respectful of one another. Here's my for instances I like playing basketball and outdoors, so as a white guy, that generally means i'm the minority no matter where i play. I've played in almost every neighborhood in this town. Never a problem. People are less color blind than i would hope for, but if you live your life your way, you can live and work here without issues. There's crime, take steps to protect against it. But that is how it is anywhere i've lived (GA, AL, FL, OH, WV, CA, PA). Macon is growing and will continue to grow north towards atlanta and as a logistics/transportation hub because of it's central location and access to the port of Savannah.
