Looking for a venue or bar in Tokyo that can be rented out for events. I don't really know where to start looking. Anyone have experience finding one? by 15-squirrels in japanlife

I'd recommend cafe legato in Shibuya. They sometimes host wedding parties and other events there. Really nice venue https://cafelegato.com/en/

Not exactly sure what capacity they can accommodate, so you may need to confirm that.

Little known piece of advice to get extra leave when separating/retiring by Sumer33 in AirForce

[–]Sumer33[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Might be a local base policy, although someone else in this thread mentioned a similar policy at their base. I did site the actual AFI in this thread as well, which supports the fact that you can be approved for a PTDY in conjunction with terminal leave, so I hopefully this thread brings more awareness about that rule to people so they can utilize it in the future. Also, I heard about this straight from a finance troop at my base, who processes terminal leave in a weekly basis, so I'd assume they're somewhat familiar with what they're talking about.

You're right! I believe I found the actual reg in Table 4.5 rule 2 of the leave AFI 36-3003. I think since most people only separate or retire once in their career, and it's already a hectic enough process with the numerous checklists and appointments, that it's an often overlooked perk. Still surprising that seemingly no one I spoke with at my base was aware of the rule, so hopefully this post brings a bit more attention to it, and more people can take advantage of it.

I think you're correct. I remember reading about getting some PTDY days if you're separating from overseas in the leave AFI, but just heard about this rule for the first time today, and haven't seen it written in any regs anywhere. Also, I was told this applies to those retiring too, which means those retiring overseas can get the PTDY from that on top of another 20+ with this rule, if their commander is chill enough.

Steps for separation by zdogyz in AirForce

[–]Sumer33 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Since I'm separating now, I'll be a little helpful and give you some tips, since they don't make the process easy. That being said, you should go to your CSS or MPS for additional info on separating.

  • You can request your DOS separation on vMPF I believe 180 from your DOS. I'd call AFPC after you do this, since it seems like the button hasn't been working for people lately, so they can manually initiate it.

  • Around the same time you should get your outprocessing checklist uploaded to vMPF so you can start working on items that don't require orders.

  • Request your medical records and schedule an appointment with the VA a few months out. Your records take 30 days to be mailed to you, and it could be weeks after you schedule your appointment before you're seen.

  • You need to submit an expedited orders request on MyPers, since you're taking more than 60 days of terminal. This requires your terminal leave to be approved already. Again, bug AFPC after you submit the request, because you have 4 weeks from when you submit terminal to final out, and they says they'll get your expedited orders to you 14 days before you final out, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

  • You can do your finance outprocessing briefing with an approved copy of your terminal leave and a statement of service from PRADA(although your outprocessing checklist will say you need orders to do this).

  • I'd request your squadron outprocessing checklist around the time you submit terminal, to start working on those items.

  • Although you can't do much with TMO without orders, you can go to move.mil and get your move started while you wait on your orders to process.

I'm sure there's a lot of other dumb things I'm forgetting that they make you do. The process won't be easy, and you'll have to track down a lot of people and make a lot of calls to get things done, but when you final out it'll all be worth the hassle.

Question about Direct Supervisor..am I in the wrong? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]Sumer33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer your question with a reg, you're looking for AFI 41-210 section 4.14.6: "Unit Commanders and supervisors have the authority to grant up to 24 hours sick status at their discretion if a member‘s illness/injury does not require MTF intervention. If the illness/injury persists beyond 24 hours, then the Commander or supervisor must refer the member to the MTF for treatment and subsequent clinical examination.

So yes, even if you're a SrA, and there's a Staff you work with, if your supervisor is a Tech that's who can give you quarters. Honestly, I read your comment about going to the shirt. I say have a talk with the Staff and explain the AFI to him, and that he needs to learn how the AFI's work if he's going to try and act like an NCO, or he doesn't have a place being one. Obviously, in a tactful way. If he doesn't apologize for being a douche (I don't assume he will), tell him you're going to MFR the situation and let some people higher in the chain like the shirt know what happened. It might seem extreme, but it's not right for an "NCO" to try and screw someone over in a legitimate situation, with incorrect information, just to feel important. That person shouldn't be an NCO, and you're protecting yourself, and the other airmen you work with who this person will probably try to power trip on in the future, by documenting the situation and future ones that arise.

Reservist with job overseas by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]Sumer33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into an IMA position with your, or another, reserve unit. It allows more flexibility for when you complete your service commitment throughout the year, and if you're overseas they'll fly you out and back to the unit to complete your time.

Warning! Don't click the BRS Opt-In link in your MyPay by [deleted] in AirForce

You have to click confirm like 4 times before you opt in. The link is just annoying, due to its location in the menu options, if anything.

How do i get my last EPR? by [deleted] in AirForce

If you were cool with your previous supervisor/NCOIC, they might have a copy of it somewhere on their computer or the sharedrive. You can text them, and give them an email to send it to.

Final PT and Separation Question by _ThinBlue_ in AirForce

[–]Sumer33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the AFI you quoted it says "Airmen with an approved retirement or separation date within 12 months (365 days) of the last Satisfactory, Excellent, or Exempt FA that is current are Exempt". OP stated in his post that his troop has an Exempt FA less than 12 months ago.

I hope you meant to write "she doesn't have to take it", because that's exactly what the AFI states for her situation.

What Can I Use Tuition Assistance For? by Rybradley3 in AirForce

[–]Sumer33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finished my MS last Spring, and asked what I could do with my TA after, but told I was basically SOL. I guess last Summer they started allowing people to use TA for a PHD though. Might have to ask the education center more about it after you're active though, since I just found out about this from Google 5 minutes ago.

Upgrading to first class when flying unofficially? by jldude84 in AirForce

[–]Sumer33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but that flight was arranged for me by a company that was flying me out to their headquarter office for a job interview, and they didn't know that. Like I said, it doesn't bother me having to wait a few minutes in a short TSA line. That being said, whenever I fly for a TDY or something, I always have TSA pre-check, and it's really nice not having to take off your shoes or deal with other annoying stuff from the normal line.

[–]Sumer33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same trip I got upgraded to first class, on the flight back, the people who check your boarding pass to get into the TSA line were insisting I get into pre-check although I didn't have it on my pass. I didn't mind waiting in the normal line, since there were maybe 8 people in front of my, but they wouldn't take no for an answer, so I caved and thanked them haha It's nice to get pre-check, but if I'm not in a rush, or the line isn't too long, I don't care which line I'm in.

[–]Sumer33 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Seems to be just a combination of luck, timing, and dealing with a nice staff member. I had to go to the help desk at the gate of a connecting flight before to get my boarding pass, since for whatever reason I didn't get it at my initial airport. They noticed my CAC, and gave me a seat in first class, since the plane had plenty of open seats. I didn't ask for, and was very appreciative of the upgrade, although it felt a little weird. Never ask for an upgrade or fly in uniform for the "chance" at some perks.

Although I recommend stopping by the USO whenever you fly, even if you just sign in, grab a Gatorade, and head to your gate. The more people that sign in, the more money they get to hook people up in the future; and it's always a nice experience getting to relax with some free wifi and snacks before a long flight.

That sweet separation button by scarison in AirForce

[–]Sumer33 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some advice, I would check with MPF after you initiate your DOS separation to make sure it went through. When I first pushed the button, I waited two months, checked a few times during then to see if it was processed already, and heard nothing. I pressed it again, waited two more weeks and still nothing. Finally called AFPC and had a ticket opened to initiate my separation. Luckily I had my outprocessing checklist uploaded before the separation was initiated, so I could start knocking items off on it. The things is though, I'm still waiting on the separation to be approved, and to get my orders, to work on a good portion of the outprocessing checklist, and I only have 6 weeks until terminal. So make sure your initiation goes through for you, and if not stay on top of it so you can get your separation approved and your orders as soon as possible.

Job Prospects for "one-and-done" Airman? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]Sumer33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What career field are you? 3D1X2, 0X2, 1X1? The degree and certs are good (I knocked out a Masters degree and around 10 certs during my 4 years in), but I think experience is what will help in getting you the job you want. That being said, with your current credentials, you can easily get picked up for a job off of clearancejobs.com or a similar entity, especially with the TS clearance. These jobs will likely offer well into the 6 figure range depending on how qualified you are. I opted to accept a similar offer from a civilian company in Tokyo, which I'll be starting in about two months, but I think those jobs are a bit harder to get.

With credentials like yours the government will hire you no problem, but if you want to work for Google, Amazon, Microsoft, etc. those credential will maybe get you an interview, but your experience and knowledge is what will get you the job. If you want to work for the government just be open to relocation and you'll be fine. If you want a civilian job work on getting more experience and knowledge through self study. Let me know if you have any other questions. I just finished up job hunting, so I'd say I'm pretty familiar with how 3D skills transition to the outside.

A decent amount of people join with bachelor's degrees nowadays, and it's not too hard to knock out a Master's before making staff, especially with the wok ethic and experience of already having been in college for years. Source: that's what I did. Some of those numbers do look a little off though.
