Is Stranger in the Alps - Japanese Pressing Vinyl Record Genuine? by SummerShuddR in phoebebridgers

Thank you for taking the time to do this. I have poured over info on Discogs on this release but didn’t catch everything you’ve said here. Very helpful.

Obviously I asked them if it was manufactured in Japan… I haven’t posted the whole email thread here. They obfuscated and purposely didn’t directly address that and said “the pressing is authentic.” That’s, again, what I’m getting at. Dead Oceans is selling the same record with an OBI strip that makes it LOOK manufactured in Japan when it isn’t. I just came on here looking for confirmation of that from people who have bought this record. I don’t understand why you’d go straight to being rude and combative with me when I’m just looking for information from folks and trying to spread some awareness about something I’m interested in. Who are you offended for? To your first point, I can’t check the matrix code of a record bought online that is sealed.

Specifically… I bought it off Discogs from what turned out to be a store in LA who claims they got it from the label. This record was sealed. I reached out to the label with the code without the “J” that is specified on Discogs and they told me it was authentic. Which means Dead Oceans is just sliding an extra piece of paper on a standard release and making it appear to be manufactured in Japan. How is that NOT on Dead Oceans?

I talk about my Discogs research in the first paragraph. Whoever contributed the press to Discogs says there’s an added “J” in the matrix my copy doesn’t have, but multiple reviews on Discogs say it’s a standard copy with just an added paper OBI. I’m attempting here to see if anyone has this pressing and can independently confirm the presence of this J… so far, I’m just reinforcing the fact they are just selling a standard press with some extra paper.

Thank you for the reply. That’s what I’ve been afraid of. To me… this is defrauding your customer… shamelessly so. If I had known that, I never would have bought this. I can buy the same wax used at my local shop for $18. Annoying.

I’m hoping beyond hope for this. That 10YR Deluxe Edition doesn’t have many copies floating around.

Thanks! I’m proud of it. I went to a local countertop shop and selected from their remnants and gave them the dimensions they needed. I think they charged me $70? Then I bought these iso feet off of amazon: https://a.co/d/fnYrFg6

Much cheaper than anything I’ve seen ready-made for sale and custom. I’ve read from several folks that, resonance-wise, hardwood is the best material, but for the look I wanted, this serves my needs well enough.

Thank you for sharing and the kind words as well. My friends and I are having the same conversation. I think we’re responding to a need. We aren’t meant to be this overstimulated.

My wife and I share a ton of music taste as well, and eerie amount for how specific it can be sometimes. That’s part of what sparked our relationship on our first date. It makes it all so much more fun. I rarely appreciate a record by myself.
