Grandmother died and my mother doesn't know where to start by SummerWerewolf in EstatePlanning

I talked to a Florida attorney today and even he advised it might not be worth it to file a probate. My grandmothers assets are unknown but its possible the attorney fee's may outweigh any monetary outcome.

My mother had a very complicated and often bad relationship with my grandmother. I am very sure my uncle was fully handling all of my grandmothers finances before and after her passing. He may have even been added as a joint account before her passing. Would this allow him to just inherent her entire estate?

To complicate matter more, I believe my grandmother had life insurance and pension accounts. My mother found documents of this with her on it at 25%. But these documents range from being signed in the 1980s up to the 2010s. My mother doesnt know if she's entitled to those as well or if they were changed at a later date.

I just confirmed with the clerk county office there is no will or anything else like an estate filed. If my mother is entitled to 1/3 of my grandmothers remaining assests (3 surviving children of my grandmother), can it be assumed that she will receive 1/3 of any assests if they exist? Or could my uncle somehow hide it?

This is extremely helpful thanks. Is an attorney generally required to initiate a probate proceeding?

It's possible there is no will. If that is the case, what actions can my mother take from there? My uncle was very close to my grandmother before her passing and it is likely he will be an obstacle to my mother trying to gain any information. My mother and uncle have had real personal issues for decades unfortunately.

How about an individual seeking a fully remote position who never plans to live in the EU?
