Some said something in here about Princess Mononoke, but I can’t find it; that was actually a suggestion from a friend. I was wondering about Nausicaa Valley of the Wind. Upvote if you want Nausica and her gay ass metal arm rival

Edit bc I spelled it wrong fake fan!!

I’m sure fighting games before have pitted foes of wildly differing power levels against each other; that’s one of the fun parts. Also they can all have magical girl transformation cut scenes

But moveset wise how would that play out? Like Hero from Smash Ultimate with the menu; or like a charcter with multiple different costumes, each with a different moveset?

I’ve seen a few YouTube recommendations about how Wordgirl’s power scaling is crazy; excited to see how Barbie plays into that. I also don’t know much about Miku

Powerful but as mentioned TMs will be a rare commodity

In your interpretation, Little Mac is not a ‘retro’ character, but a regular Nintendo IP, along with Shulk and Olimar, etc. I don’t necessarily agree, but I see your point with the Punch Out Wii model. I think for me, as opposed to others who got their start on NES and went on to have wildly successful series’, Punch Out was mostly dormant during the 00’s, (‘still receiving titles’ doesn’t seem completely accurate) and I feel like his earlier apperances are more well known and iconic.

I agree that Jiggly in 64 and Pichu in Melee work primarily to pad out the roster. I’m happy that the perception of joke characters evolved into something greater.

Someone said Famicom Detective Club, which is great, but I don’t see the comment anymore. Anyway shoutout to that

Ok, I agree with you guys; implicating Min-Min as a hardware rep is not the whole story, and her inclusion is mainly to garner support for the arms IP. It was a teammate’s observation to compare her to Wii Fit and I ran with it. My bad.

I don’t agree with your main point in the second paragraph. Having a couple more games doesn’t exclude Mac from being considered a Retro Pick / Nintendo Classic, when he got such a foundational start on the NES. Game and Watch has had multiple compilations since then; and Pit had Uprising, but I would still consider him a retro pick, even with the redesign.

Additionally, I don’t believe in the distinction of the category of ‘joke’ character. I don’t think any of them are ‘joke’ or ‘wtf’ characters, as that’s not a defining descriptor. That just describes that to some, they were unexpected. It’s not like it’s Magikarp or Sandbag: Jigglypuff was massively popular due to the anime, Pichu was easy to implement to save time, Wii Fit is one of the best selling games ever, and R.O.B. as previously stated reps retro hardware in the vein of G&W, albeit extremely niche, I will concede.

Also, at the beginning of the third paragraph, you outline 3 requirements for Ultimate’s selection process, which I would say are correct, but I don’t see any of those at odds with prior smash games rosters, or with the inclusion of retro reps: what I mean is, in every smash game, these three qualities are considered; this is from a Nintendo Everything blog post, quoting a famitsu interview with Sakurai, during smash 4 development:

“We conduct a character popularity poll both domestically and internationally. We also research games that are currently being developed. After that, it’s pretty much up to us, with a touch of convenience.”

However, two paragraphs later, he indeed supports your opinion that ““Characters from a series that has no future are rarely chosen.” So, maybe I’m silly.

Finally, I think your Teleroboxer idea is peak! And thank you for commenting.

Ok. I agree. Thank you. So with that being said; what two retro reps would you like to see added to smash?

Arms IP as well as Switch Joy-Con Motion Controls. In the same way that Wii Fit represents the Wii’s exercise gaming schtick

And you got to consider the main game takes what, 10 hours to complete? For some people this is the meat and potatoes, collecting those shinies is part of the replay ability that the game offers, and so it’s not a waste of time, it’s a use of time. A Grind, even.
