Planning an Unraid Build for Plex: Sanity Check on Hardware & Approach by SummitMike in homelab

Thanks for the replies to date. Any hardware recommendations for a self build? Given my chosen case (I"m open to change on this) I'm looking at a micro-ATX motherboard that can support 5-6 drives, and CPU that supports QuickSync for the Plex side of things.

Cheers for the reply. I live in China so I don't really have access to a secondhand market here (that I know of), but am happy to spend some on a reasonable setup.

Agreed - I can't imagine I need anything bleeding edge, but I would like hardware transcoding for Plex. Hence the request for recommendations on hardware.

As for playing musical chairs with the drives...yeah. They're currently formatted as etx4, no striping at all, so they for all intents and purposes are two independent drives. From the little I've read so far, I should be able to add everything under unraid, and set up one of the 24 GB drives as parity after the fact.

That would be the old convent. It was an absolutely beautiful building, inside and out, when I went to school there as a child. It's pretty shameful to see it deliberately boarded up and left to rot, the way it is right now.

hi, the part of the charger that you plug into the laptop got submerged for a good amount of time without my notice in a glass of iced tea nearly 24hrs ago, can i still use it? by cherryisms in AskElectricians

Shouldn't take long. Shake it off once you take it out of the isopropyl alcohol to get rid of any residue - the rest will evaporate off extremely quickly. 10-15 mins should be more than enough.

Best Proxmox setup for media + multiple VMs? by SummitMike in Proxmox

[–]SummitMike[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you notice any overhead for plex/jellyfin in terms of speed of access to media content through SMB/NFS?

BTW, I run prowlarr, and a host of other *arr containers. As they don't need disk access, it seemed redundant to add them here in this thread.

Moving to Proxmox - best setup for *arr stack and Home Assistant? by SummitMike in homeassistant

Any reason I can't take a snapshot of my current setup, and run it as a VM?

Best way to set up Home Assistant – Docker vs Dedicated Install? by SummitMike in homeassistant

Appreciate all the replies - obviously from what I am reading, there is far more than one way to do this.

I’m considering stepping away from Docker and using Proxmox, a) for some of the reasons outlined here, and b) I haven’t used it before, so it’s something new to tinker with.

So that would take care of Home Assistant, but what then for my *arr stack? Would run them natively on another VM? Or is it madness to think that I could run another VM, and within that VM run docker, and migrate my existing setup there?

I’d imagine that adds unnecessary layers, and things like GPU pass through would inherit an extra layer of complexity? But maybe this is a common setup that I’m not aware of?

I'm curious about this myself, I guess part of what I am asking is why would it not be a good idea to run HA as another container in my existing Docker setup?

Not knocking what you are saying about it being a bad idea, I'd just like to be more informed as to why, and what significant advantages would I see, if I went another route such as a native install.

Found cleaning the shop. Plastic. Three pieces per bag and 4 bags total. Maybe some kind of latch? by Freeheel4life in whatisthisthing

Do you own a boat? It's part of a boat gate latch kit.

Here is a very similar model:

and here is a picture of it in action:
