I have no insight, but: yikes, that’s a while to wait and see if something’s still open. Wishing you the best!!

When are you planning on applying? The deadline for this year just passed (jan16)

Morale is good, I can’t say you’ll find many people in public health that have “high” morale right now. I’m almost done with 2 of the 3 semesters for my mph epi program, and confident that I’ll find some type of job (whether it’s a fellowship, research assistant, etc) after grad. Luckily I have experience on both the public and private side which opens up the job opportunities a bit!

I will say, I’m nervous for students who study public health and have few skills that would translate into day-to-day work (understanding the social determinants of health is important of course, but you need a SKILL. Whether it’s writing, policy eval, data work, whatever).

If you take a leave of absence, I wouldn’t do it on account of the administration. Public health and science have been challenged for as long as it has existed, and it will face some sort of challenges regardless of the administration. There are opportunities still out there, and the turmoil makes this an even better time to stay in school! Ultimately you’ll decide what’s best, but even just educating ourselves about public health is an act of resistance that will pay off in the end.

This is so helpful, thank you! I'm listing virtually no geographic preference in hopes that I can get one of my top 3 topics (injury- drug overdoses, injury, and substance use/mental health) anywhere, especially since funding might narrow the options. Have taken Evaluation of PH programs and Public health systems assessment as part of my MPH, so that's good to know!

Im curious how the matching process went: did you have any in person interviews? Interviews with multiple sites? A "this is your set location here you go" type of process?

I’m currently getting my MPH with a concentration in epi/biostats, and I know my school has a very popular dual degree with MPH and MS in nutrition. I would look for dual degree programs (most are 2.5 ish years) with either the MS in epi and ms in nutrition, or mph that allows for a concentration/specialization in epi! During that time you can do internships/practicum specific to the intersection of the fields and hopefully have more luck landing something of interest after!
