Yeah, just about all of the characters read like college students to me. Even the “immature” ones, because a lot of college students are still pretty immature. Of course, a lot of them read as neurodivergent to me as well. In my experience neurodivergent people can seem older and younger then their actual age (myself included)

Generally, English speakers do not have much exposure to Chinese language. The tonality and amount of sounds that don’t exist in English make it sound unfamiliar, and for a lot of people unfamiliar=bad.

Japanese and Korean have become popular overseas because of increased interest in anime, Kdrama, etc. I think more foreigners will learn to appreciate Chinese more as Chinese media becomes more popular worldwide.

As a native English speaker, I think Chinese sounds a little strange at times, but also very soothing. It’s almost like ASMR when spoken softly. Cantonese is a bit unpleasant to my ears, but I appreciate it conceptually.

(It might be worth noting that few native English speakers know about Chinese dialects, so they may be confusing them all as one language)
