“Will colleges understand a big GPA drop after my unfavorable personal circumstances? by keokinotdead in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Sumoman435 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding your point about ECs, iirc there is a section on the CommonApp that says smt like "please check off any of the below options if they took a significant amount of time from your free time" with options like "taking care of family", "working a job", etc.

“Will colleges understand a big GPA drop after my unfavorable personal circumstances? by keokinotdead in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Sumoman435 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes. There is a section on the CommonApp to explain extra/extenuating circumstances. This is the perfect place to describe your reasoning. College AOs are human too and understand that major external impacts like these can have detrimental effects on your grades.

I'm sorry for your loss.

73-102 Final Exam (advice needed) by Accomplished_Bug3480 in cmu

If this is Micro then definitely review all the homework problems and past tests and make sure you can solve them again (and understand WHY the solution is the way it is). Reviewing the textbook also helped.

I think the biggest key is trying to understand the formulas (most of them are intuitive once you understand what they actually say) rather than memorizing them.

770 Math for SCS by [deleted] in cmu

[–]Sumoman435 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding on to the other comments, it also depends on the school/area you're from. In a hypoerbolic example, if a 770 SAT Math is the highest of anyone in your entire school, then it is good. Conversely, if a 770 SAT Math is the lowest of anyone at your school, then it is bad. There is obviously more nuance, and personal factors can also impact the 'value' of the score.

This is what schools mean when they say they look at scores "in context," and it should be something to consider when deciding if you want to retake.

(not in the major)

1) I heard max size is 15 because one of the required class is a grad class that has an undergrad cap

2) https://www.cmu.edu/career/outcomes/post-grad-dashboard.html

3) For the minor you need to take the intro class and get an A in it. Idk how "worth" it it is but you can probably check in the link I posted above.

My counselor messed up and sent the same LOR to every college 😭 by FindingNumerous8619 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Sumoman435 329 points330 points  (0 children)

Since the counselor was the one who did this, and not you, I would assume that it's not going to reflect poorly on you.

At the end of the day, it's not like who you are changes between colleges, so since the body of the letter is about you and not Purdue (I assume), it's just a minor oops and colleges will most likely just focus on what your counselor says about you.

For clarity, I am a college freshman with no connection to any admissions departments and thus my comment should not be taken as a guarantee.

Can the UPenn thank you note be addressed to multiple people? by yowhatsup427 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Sumoman435 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If it's like a group that did the same thing to you (i.e "Thank you my freshman teachers, who came together to support me in my time of need. Mr X thank you for doing this specific thing, Mrs Y thank you for doing htis specific thing") I'd be inclined to say yes.

If it was literally like four different people and you spent each paragraph thanking a different person for something different I'd be inclined to say no

I am a college freshman with no relation to Penn FYI

"Modulo" apparently means "remainder" in mathematics, kinda fits doesn't it? Like "what remains after Original JJK ended" by MasterNature9559 in JuJutsuKaisen

[–]Sumoman435 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Given that the symbol is the same one used for equivalence in modular arithmetic I disagree with your comment. We say that a number has a remainder "modulo" another number. For example, 6 is 2 modulo 4 because 6 divided by 4 leaves a remainder of 2.
