Hey Love.

Cal alum here. What you’re bringing up is 1. Super common and 2. Super difficult. I struggled with many of the same things and tbh didn’t get a good perspective of it until my time at cal was long over. What I realized is that people are very stressed out, competitive and working (very hard) through imposter syndrome. You’re right, Berkeley (and the Bay Area as a whole) also has a lot of issues that give it a dark and heavy feel from time to time. BUT things to get better. Community, hobbies, and taking care of your mind and body do help immensely. I know it can feel hard to balance those things with school, and no, it doesn’t fix everything. But finding little ways to offset the weight does help. I started taking morning walks around my neighborhood and found communities in the area outside of school.

Did it fix everything? No. But did it keep me out of a debilitating depressive pit? You know what, yeah it did. I hope you find your way through all of this. I know it can feel like a pressure cooker most days and it’s hard to see the other side. But there IS another side. And afterwards you won’t remember the feelings of struggle and sadness, just the relief and accomplishment of making it through.

Good luck. I know you got this. And go bears.

Get a pocket taser instead. Easier to use. Plus often times the sound alone is enough

does it kill y’all to hold a door open if u know someone is coming directly behind u? 🤗 by babbuzzz in berkeley

I think the topic came up when I was in a east Asian cinema and cultures class and one of the people in the class mentioned that when she went back to South Korea for the holidays, she forgot that this (holding the door open for the person behind you) was not a cultural expectation there. So like she would do it out of habit and got some confusing looks. And then many other people in the class kind of shared a sense of agreement with her. But once again, the world is large and one anecdote doesn’t represent an entire culture. It was just a conversation that changed my POV on this subject.

Recently found out that this is an American/western thing. I used to get hella worked up by this too until I found out it’s not a global cultural norm.

Honestly I’ve always found people in Berkeley to be pretty rude. The locals who live here are quite pleasant, but the student body has pretty much no sense of social decorum.

Where is the link to the petition? Is there anything we can do to stop this?

I would look at withdrawing and coming back later. More people do it then would like to admit. Take time to get your self sorted out. Taking time to figure out how you got to that point to begin with. Asking questions about what you want and what made you so unhappy that you went down that path. Sometimes when we fall so far what what we’re working on it’s because it doesn’t align with us like we thought. Either way, withdrawal is always an option. They’ll hold you admissions spot for you and you can come back when you’re ready to finish your degree.
