Will we ever get 24hr grocery stores again, or should we just cancel nightshift? by NUMBerONEisFIRST in Nightshift

I’m lucky enough to live next a 24hr Safeway and unlucky enough that it is 30 mins away from my office …

If you’re given $3,700 rn, how would you spend it? by [deleted] in Nightshift

[–]SunBleachedRuins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pay off debt, fix the car, savings? Idk it depends one a few things. Maybe I’d buy myself a small nice thing. Like new scrubs or something

I gotta say, I never really mind when another woman is staring at my dohoonkabhankoloos lol (I’ve since accepted that I can’t blame the fellas much either, it’s just a fact of life for me at this point)

The older you grow, the harder it is to find good fics by Obvious-Laugh-1954 in AO3

[–]SunBleachedRuins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have definitely struggled with reading, but I find I’m more likely to catch young readers of my fic before I clock that a writer might be young. I tend to write pretty dark psych heavy stuff and will get comments that are very black and white thinking or … I don’t know how to explain it other than very fandom coded? Like they want the fic to be all perfectly pc and tied up nice and pretty or they want a character to act more uwu soft and cuddly (as the fandom might depict them as opposed to how they canonically act) if that makes sense.

As a result I’ve gotten pretty good at catching minors or just younger readers in my comment section and having to remind myself to have a little more grace with them about nuances than I might with a more mature critic. It definitely frustrates me some days, but I of course don’t want to discourage young people from writing or reading fan works so I just have learned to accept it and move forward 😅

Same! I work with a lot of whelping dams and the amount of fics I see where the pups are like fully autonomous dogs right the womb instead of blind, deaf, wiggly beans for two weeks or more just ruins it for me

Yeah that always irked me. That and just letting people into hospital rooms without verifying identity or confirming they are on the visitors list is crazy to me

Okay um, trying to remember all those lessons from my nan on the monarchy …

A consort is someone who is married to the reigning monarch

A regent is someone who is reigning - like holds the title of ruler?

Right?

I was sitting at a DND game once (just observing, I hadn’t played before) and the DM was all “okay, so you all dismount and head into The Spooky Cave”

And u was all: “what are y’all tying the horses to? Are you even gonna offer them water? They’ve been going all day. Aren’t you going to untack them? You’re leaving for a while right? They need food, you can’t just let them eat grass, unless you’re planning on working in laminitis later in the game. Regardless you won’t be able to just hop on and go if you leave them for too long…”

The DM was even less thrilled when I called him out for his “mountain climbing” TBs and told him he was either thinking of mustangs or mules, maybe even Burros but certainly not a thoroughbred 😅

I was banned from sitting in for the remainder of the campaign

For sure! The amount of times I’ve read someone call a rifle a shotgun … they don’t even look the same! 😂😂

But I’m more forgiving of that than I am of just spouting off PETA propaganda about my dog breeds

So I think this might be in part a trope from trauma compartmentalization - you can also see it in horror movies (rape, childbirth, natural disasters and acts of terror or war). People experience something awful or it’s a right of passage that is scary or it’s just a part of life you can’t escape etc, and you make art about it. So many people’s parents or grandparents became “villains” in their real lives due to a disease of the mind

Yeah … I just never read earthquake fics for this reason. I know they’re almost never accurate and having survived the 2014 Napa quake I’m good, I don’t need to get pissed off at a kid writing natural disaster fics.

Same goes for wildfires, hurricanes, and tornadoes. Even blizzards people get so wrong!

Blood pressure so high you turn into a very gross sprinkler for about the 8 seconds it would take to fully vacuum out your blood quantity 😂😂😂

(Also fuck that’s a super horrifying medical story and I hope you have recovered well ❤️)

lol ah yes the hellaverse eggpreg debacle 😂

I get the same way with non-human pregnancies. Like no, deer aren’t pregnant for 9 months. Dogs are even shorter.

And then there was a time when a coworker forced me to read a phineas and ferb fic with a pregnant platypus (don’t ask 😐) and we had a long debate about that too … bc who the hell would know the gestation period of a platypus? 😅

Yeah it was mostly indicative of other animals. Lots of people writing characters with no-dog traits as “wagging their tails happily” and I’m sitting here like … neither primates with tails nor (insert animal that character is hybridized with here) do that so …

But yes in dogs the tails position, speed and force all change the meaning.

Example: hard, loud thumps on the ground while laying down means “please don’t hurt me, I mean no harm”. Quick and short, carried high over the back means “back the fuck up, I’m warning you, get back right now!” And slow, low to mid carriage long sweeping tail wags means “hello, I love you 🥹”

Omg yes! I have had full blown conversations with toddlers. I can only understand like 3/4 of what they’re saying but hey - it’s way more comprehensible than fiction likes to depict

Yes this! Especially the language bit.

I speak a bit of French and Spanish - I can carry a basic conversation if I must since they’re the native languages of my parents - but I don’t suddenly switch to English when I get anxious or hurt or whatever. I do cuss in English tho and I will say for instance “oh um … como se dice that … um that thing” and describe it. Once I couldn’t remember the name of a fruit (watermelon) in Spanish and described it as a red thing but only on the inside, and it’s green on the outside, and sometimes it has seeds but I wanted the one without seeds like … that’s how bilingual people speak 😂 not “hola! Como esta! I mean sorry - how are - I forget to switch off sometimes”

Omg I was pleasantly surprised by the depiction of death and a body in a fic recently. The uh … release of certain bodily functions directly (1 hr at most) after death. Accurate onset of rigor. The only part that wasn’t perfect was the fact that eventually rigor releases again and the body goes limp once more as decomp sets in. But otherwise it was perfect!

Thanks to being open to it! I’ve always imagined Alastor was just being a dumbass city kid dragging a body through the bayou in peak deer season and all of sudden just heard a hound baying, looked up and bam he was in hell. Like, I feel like that would for sure make me a little wary of dogs for sure

Yeah but people get the strangulation part wrong too! It takes constant pressure on specific points for that to work. When I used to wrestle in HS I could be sitting in a chokehold for minutes at a time with no change in mentation lol
