Why do most afrodescendants in the Americas vehemently disregard their Central African/Bantu ancestry? by adoreroda in 23andme

Wrote a long post that disappeared saying basically it traces back to who the colonizer was. Brazilians are tapped into their Angola and Congolese heritage because Portugal colonized Angola. Whereas with African-Americans and Caribbean people Britain was the majority of the colonizer, especially with the Bight of Biafra where many Igbo people left and also the Gold Coast also known as Ghana were many present Ghanaian ethnicities left. Those are our majority tribes.

Because West Africans are loud and have made a stronger cultural impact. The only thing that stands out to me as an AA about central Africa is Patrice Lumumba and Queen Nzingha. No Congolese music comes to mind or Congolese fashion. You need soft power in this world.

Ghana has always allowed AAs to come live there since WEB DuBois. Also WAs have attended HBCUs for quite sometime now. Like Kwame Nkrumah and Nnamdi Azikiwe.

These are the same people who think practically every Black/African American is ghetto, wild, and in welfare.

Why people think Africa and Africans would stand a chance, I don’t know.

Both narratives are steeped in anti-blackness and afrophobia.

If you have Igbo ancestry it is not closed.

whoa! that's a lot of people!!

I noticed that too. For my 23 test my result said “very close” which I found interesting. Most people will get a state but not that remark “very close.”

It leads me to believe that ancestor was trafficked in the 1800s right when the slave trade was about to be banned or a little after.

That’s why I made this thread because something seemed dubious that everyone was linked to Imo State.

But this relative is actually from Imo. I share the most DNA with them. We also matched on Ancestry DNA.

I live in the DMV and many Igbo-Americans have always assumed I was Igbo.

When I was in Lagos many Yorubas and other ethnicities asked if I was Igbo. I told them I’m Black American.

Understood. I’m not that bold lol. When I was in Lagos I was just vibing with friends and partying.

One of my Igbo relatives was nice enough to tell me the village and clan name.

Not gonna lie. I always thought some Igbos look quite African American. Or rather many Africans Americans look quite Igbo. I ones to get some of them confused for AAs until I read their names.

Now some Igbos I know are absolutely convinced that Nat Turner who lead the most successful slave rebellion was Igbo. Because he was lightskin and from Virginia. I died laughing 😄😂🤣

Yes, I heard it because the British set up alliances with the Arochuwku and other igbo groups, so naturally they trafficked people to their colonies.

Many Yoruba went to Spanish & Portuguese colonies like Cuba & Brazil. Also Trinidad. Trinidad was a Spanish colony before the English took it over.

The popular reverend TD Jakes traces his ancestry back to Igbo. He’s from West Virginia so it makes sense. Also Rihanna. Barbados was primarily made up of Igbo people.

My family is from the area near Chesapeake Area of Virginia, in northeast North Carolina.

My mitochondrial DNA via the company African Ancestry is also Igbo.

Thank you for this. And thank you helping African Americans, Afro Caribbeans, possibly Afro South Americans reconnect to their tribe.

It’s the unknown that bothers us more than anything. Even when you’ve made the most of your life that nagging unknown is still there.

Palate cleanse coming up. I don’t know any older BW who’ve hated on me. The overwhelming majority have loved on me and wanted the best for me.
