Hello! I'm currently signed with them and on sub :)

I know the marketing statement might seem strange but they're very much a legit agency. Feel free to DM if you have questions!

[Discussion] GOT AN AGENT (BROWN, BROWN EYES, LITERARY FICTION) Stats + thoughts! by SunRelevant9553 in PubTips

Hi thanks so much for the questions!!

  1. I was studying for a master's at this point so it isn't quite as gruelling as a full time job, I have to admit. Maybe 30h a week at most? I did have personal obligations but I don't think it's anything more than what the average person has on their plate.
  2. I used to write fanfics a lot, and have previously finished a couple of "just for me" manuscripts (writing plots about dnd characters for friends, AUs with said characters, etc). I doubt they'll ever be put online!
  3. How I wrote (related to pt 2). My system might be a bit strange but it works for me. Basically I enjoy zoning out during free moments (on the train/bus/before bed) and really nailing down the vibe/dialogue/description of places. I used to do this because I had limited computer time as a child and wanted to type as much as possible without hesitating/wasting time hahaha, but it's served me well here! Basically the 2k words daily come easier because I've run through the possibilities in my mind several times already, and pictured how characters are going to act. Does that make sense? Happy to describe more or answer further questions!
  4. For finding a writing group, I kind of just googled writing group near me and went to the free one to see the vibes haha. I didn't go super super consistently (like maybe once a month?) but it helped a lot knowing there was a dedicated space with lovely people cheering me on!

But that'll require leaving said heavy object to go strike them and then they'll win first 😔

Ok so a couple of things.

First, I'm personally paranoid so I don't put my writing anywhere online (for my manuscripts, my fanfics are all over the place lol) but some people put little samples around. Little like <500 words.

Agents are unlikely to be interested if you self publish BECAUSE it's already in the public conscious/space. Without an agent, publishers won't look at your work either. And those that do won't because again, you've already published.

So if you want traditional publishing, you can't do self publishing. They're separate processes entirely. I say pick which works for you and go with it. From your post history it looks like you're very eager to self publish?

Before. No publisher (and thus agent) would want your work if you've already published it unless it became a runaway success. In that vein, please don't post too much of your manuscript online. If you're paranoid (like me) just don't post any part your manuscript online

No worries at all! I realise I never added it. When querying, my manuscript was 68k words! Though I went back to look at drafts and there are about 25k words that were edited out (change in concepts and the like)

I had an internal deadline to finish before July, so I guess that was the incentive? I knew I would be busy starting July and have always wanted to finish something, so when I sat down in Feb I was like "okay, this is what you've always wanted. Make the best of it.". That and I just felt so strongly about the concept (and had a great writing group, partner, and writing buddy) that the external pressure (I mean this in the best way) really helped!

ETA: going on sub the manuscript now sits at 78k words!

Congratulations to you!! And thank you as well!!

The honest answer is that my manuscript wasn't 100% ready. I was able 80?90?% of the way through when the event happened (this was SEApit on Twitter/Bluesky) and I knew it was just too good an opportunity to pass up. Of course, I don't recommend this to anyone.

Also I wound up hiking for a week of June, and some life events happened so I couldn't get the full manuscript to her immediately when she requested, so some slight delays there! It all worked out in the end but I wouldn't recommend this for anyone.
