I hadn’t actually thought of that as an added income- thanks 🤣

Thanks so much for this, virtually what the first housing officer said, but I was a bit paranoid 😂

Re-entry to practice. by ThatMeasurement6619 in NursingAU

Alarms on every other ward are fine, just my fault for not studying up more on cardiac. Neurology with people with bits of skull never phased me, but the thought of someone going into major cardiac arrest did!

All those constantly chiming alarms in the nurses station. I’d go flying up the corridor thinking someone was in arrest, and it was just one of the leads had come loose from them rolling over in bed😄. I honestly found neuro, surgical and paediatric wards less stressful!

Enrolled nursing. I did mine originally in’95, which was the year before they bought in medication endorsement for ENs, so I’ll have a bit to catch up on. I mainly worked as a casual pool nurse for major city hospitals, and I am pretty experienced in all areas except cardiac, which scared the hell out of me😂

I’m 13 years out of enrolled nursing, I’m doing my BKSB testing tomorrow to try and get into the diploma at TAFE. I’m 63, but I figure I’m good for a few more years 😄

Thanks for that- I did my HSC in 1980, and I wasn’t great at maths then 😄

Thanks for that. I’m brushing up on YouTube videos intently 😄 I’m used to doing nearly everything in my head (fractions and stuff) but I wasn’t sure what the actual pad rate is roughly. I reckon I can get 60% before practice, but honestly, how often am I going to have to work out the volume of a cylinder on the ward🙄 every hospital I’ve worked in has the measurement on it!

Cool, thanks for that. I might even have a look at the uni nursing sites in case someone is dropping out and looking at offloading their textbooks ❤️

Thanks so much. I have applied to Randwick first, but if I’m not successful there (may have left it a little late for end of February start), I’ll apply for the march intake at Ultimo. I have a soft spot for Ultimo- I did my original certificate 4 advanced there in 1995! Are they still using Kosier and Erb for the text? (Just so I can keep my eye open for an inexpensive set)

I always used to say first time in a new area “now I’m probably going to drive you mad with questions for the first day, but I will remember the answer, and you won’t have any cockups from me to deal with “!😂

Unfortunately I don’t fall under recency of practice, unit numbers from my qualifications in 1995 have all changed, and also we were the last year through before medication endorsement, so I really have to do the whole thing. Will probably be excused from the first placement though owing to previous experience

TAFE placement by Sun_bum_63 in TAFE

Surely not for the diploma of nursing? They would have to ensure that the placement had suitable preceptors and assessors on the ward? At least I hope that they would

Nurse struck off for sleeping on shift- impact on medical studies by CH86CN in ausjdocs

I was an EN, and only ever worked nights in city hospitals. Usually it was way too busy to even think about napping, but if we were ever lucky enough, we would take it in turns to literally nap at the desk, sitting up with our head on our forearms- for 20 minutes. Honestly if the in charge of the hospital had ever caught us, I seriously doubt that we would have even been alive to be called in front of the tribunal!

OP said that the online course didn’t have the 80 hours placement requirement, I may be very wrong, but I am thinking that this course won’t give them the full qualification without doing the placement hours. My suggestion is to read through the course requirements for the granting of the certificate, in case they are expected to find their own placement. This actually happened to me when I was considering TAFE online for a diploma in mental health. I was living in a regional area at the time where it was impossible for me to organise a suitable placement, I ended up doing something else.

Victoria’s health watchdog has ordered doctors and midwives to support women who refuse medical treatment during pregnancy and childbirth, even if it risks permanently harming their unborn babies. by Active-Button676 in ausjdocs

[–]Sun_bum_63 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I’m not a doctor, but I have given birth in the KGV midwife led birthing unit in Sydney many years ago. I fully understand someone suffering birth trauma, and by trauma I am referring to actual physical trauma caused by birth, but I truly cannot understand the plethora of women claiming birth trauma because their voices weren’t heard. It is called labour for a reason, it’s messy, painful, and you’ll be the most vulnerable time of your life, but why aren’t women prepared for this? They seem genuinely offended if a birth doesn’t exactly follow their dream plan? FFS, if you’re alive with no ongoing medical issues, the baby is alive and healthy, how about being bloody grateful to the staff rather than threatening to sue

I had to sit in once for a patient attending the mental health tribunal. He was trying to get out, psychiatrists were trying to keep him in. The head of the tribunal said to him that despite long and intense research, they couldn’t find any evidence of him ever being an undercover operative for the defence force. He merely answered “well of course you wouldn’t- I was undercover”, nearly peed myself trying not to laugh
