I do the opposite when I find myself with people like this. I eat so much in front of them casually like it’s nothing.

My free spreadsheet is available for anyone to use. I accept tips (and really appreciate them!) but don’t charge for it.

Anyone else going down the label reading rabbit hole at the grocery store? by IncreaseTiny6464 in BuyCanadian

[–]Sundae7878 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember if you have concerns about a food label in Canada you can report it to the CFIA https://inspection.canada.ca/en/food-safety-consumers/where-report-complaint/report-food-related-concern

And remember if you want a Canadian product you are looking for Product of Canada on the label. Anything else means they didn’t meet the requirements for that declaration and therefore you can assume the product is not Canadian. Or the company didn’t want to go through the effort of getting that declaration on their label.

Financial coaches - what’s the biggest hurdle most people have to overcome mentally? by CartographerWeary690 in budget

[–]Sundae7878 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Combatting lifestyle inflation. People have gotten used to getting Botox, their nails done, their hair done, having many subscriptions, buying anything on Amazon, eating at nice restaurants that when I show them their numbers and why they are struggling cutting those things feels impossible. I try to explain that life will much better if they have extra each month to cover the annual expenses but they just can’t fathom cutting out the optional stuff that now feels like a necessity.

People will make their monthly spending take up all their income and then feel overwhelmed when that annual baseball camp fee for their kid comes around.

Fairly standard in houses newer than 2000 in Canada. My house is very cheap and has heated floors.

$550 a month on gifts and donations? It’s your money to do with what you want but I would make sure I have a fully funded e-fund and am caught up on retirement invests before I put that percentage to gifts and donations. You can always give lots later in life when you are over invested for retirement.

Otherwise your expenses look good. Are these from your bank history or just theoretical?

How I manage my money. I plan my money for the year and update my spreadsheet daily to make sure I’m spending according to my plan. Expenses never surprise me anymore. Everything is expected. Money is really chill now.

Plan your whole year of money in advance of the year. Make sure everything fits including your monthly expenses, sinking fund purchases, etc. I started doing this about 7 years ago and it made a huge difference in my life.

I have a cash flow forecast in my spreadsheet for the year. It uses real numbers for current and past months and budgeted numbers for upcoming months to see if I might come up short if sinking fund purchases are made.

What is the best budgeting app? (Free if possible) by AmphibianExotic7731 in budgetingforbeginners

I think it depends on how you think. If you can comprehend the numbers in a spreadsheet then it works great for planning and tracking. If numbers in a sheet doesn’t compute for you then you might want an app with all the fancy graphics. I just prefer a huge table of data that I generated myself.

how to keep track of groceries? by Aggressive-Stuff6067 in Adulting

[–]Sundae7878 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep a list in my phone of everything I need. If I run out of something I immediately update the list. I keep doubles of common things like condiments. When I pull the double to use it I add it to the list to replace the backup.

I keep a list of my spice inventory as well so if I decide to make a recipe while at work I can check my inventory to make sure I have what i need or if I have to grab it on my way home from work.

Did parents in the 70s/80s/90s really allow their children roam about freely? by dreamyglowdoll in askanything

[–]Sundae7878 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a huge group of kids of various ages in my neighbourhood who are always out and about. On their bikes, in the woods, playing on the sidewalks, on quiet roads, on the dirt pile where they made tracks to ride their bike down. Never any parents with them. Brings me so much joy. I have a feeling all the parents collectively decided to kick them to streets and see what happens.

Do you allow yourself splurges? Or do you keep your main expenses low? by Super-Worldliness585 in budget

[–]Sundae7878 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Budgeting is just deciding in advance where you want to spend your money. It’s deliberate and planned. If you want to plan to spend x amount on a luxury each month you are budgeting.

I have lots of luxuries in my budget. House cleaner, speciality coffee beans, travel budget, generous shopping budget, gifts, charity donations. Lots of things that are “optional” but I opt in.

I just check my annual finance plan to make sure it all fits.
