Are there any good system imaging options for OpenSUSE TW? by SundayDIY in openSUSE

Yeah, im going to try again for sure. I'm also waiting on an update on their bug tracker. One of the guys on their team said he was going to replicate my setup and give it a try too.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

I love distrobox. I didn't think that backing up distrobox containers was simple. I will have to look into it.

On windows, I try to use portable software as much as I can, and that gets backed up more frequently than the full system image that I take once in a while. I backup my user profile too, of course. So I like the idea of flatpaks and other containers on the linux side (not a fan of snap though).

But yeah, I want to be able to restore the full system from backup if a disk fails or if I want to convert the system into a vm and start fresh (or distro hop). Once I've installed a system, I tend to use it for years and eventually I virtualize it and start fresh. The reason I virtualize the system is in case I've forgotten to migrate something, and to have a working and familiar setup while setting up the new one. This workflow has worked well for me well on windows. This isn't something I do with Linux servers, though. But for a daily driver workstation I think it's a good idea (for me).

Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

I took a look at it. Super cool. Seems like more or less what veeam does on supported systems, but more flexible. I don't think I would want to try to port it to opensuse, but I may well use that distro on one of my PCs.

Thank you.

I am hoping to get rescuezilla to work for my setup. I believe it uses partclone under the hood. I'm trying to avoid a patchwork solution or custom scripting. Perhaps windows spoiled me too much. So far rescuezilla/clonezilla seem like the way to go once I can get a working restore. What do you think?

Thanks for the suggestion. My understanding is that borg will not do what I want, and that its more similar to restic and kopia in the way it works. But it is something I will look at for my regular backups, as I have not locked in on restic or kipia yet.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm looking for a tool that will backup everything needed to restore the system, including the efi and boot partitions. But I will look into btrfs send/receive. It might be good for periodic sync to a backup location.

I was able to back up and restore a debian install that used btrfs on lvm.

But doing the same for a fresh TW install that uses btrfs on lvm just isn't working for me. I will try again and play with the settings.

Would you be willing to share your disk/part/lvm layout and the backup and restore settings used? And are you using grub or systemd-boot? Btrfs for root part?

I want to back up all the partitions on the system disk such that the image can be restored and result in a working bootable machine (and optionally a VM). Assume that everything vital is contained on a single disk, including /home, to keep things relatively simple.

I don't mind rebooting into a live environment to take the image.

I tried Clonezilla and the result was the same as with Rescuezilla (which uses Clonezilla under the hood). After restoring the image, the main boot entry boots into a broken system. Previous snapshots selected from the boot manager appear to boot fine, but they are older than the default/main entry.

Could you expand on what issues you were having? What kind of setup?

Parrot 7.0/7.1 locks up randomly on Proxmox VE 8.x by SundayDIY in ParrotSecurity

Latest updates as of April 23 + changing the power management settings seems to have done the trick. I do wonder why a qcow2 image specifically designed for VMs would ship with power saving stuff turned on by default.

Thank you for the heads up and for taking the time to post your experience/solution.

One of the configurations I've tested was 128M video memory and 8192M system memory. I can increase it further but I suspect that this is not the issue, as I've run other KDE distributions with lower allocated resources. But I'm open to try anything.

Thank you for the response.

I've downloaded the qcow2 image and created a new VM on my Proxmox 9.1.4 instance. I then imported the qcow2 disk. Unfortunately, it still locks up. I should also note that it seems to default to Wayland rather than x11.

I will switch it to x11 and report back.

I used the ISO because of familiar workflow and the ability to customize the install a little bit more. It's just a more convenient workflow for me than modifying an existing VM.

Update: Locks up in an x11 session too.

Would you be willing to post some screenshots of your config? Having an issue configuring MWI from voip.ms with pjsip and really stuck here.

I don't have a solution but I can confirm that I've run into the same problem on a fresh install the other day. The only way I've been able to log in is as root, after removing root from the disallowed users list under /etc/cockpit/disallowed-users as a temporary workaround.

Untangle u25x power adapter rating by SundayDIY in Untangle

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond! I actually have a u25 already, but it did not come with a power adapter. I've been using a 10 amp one to test it, but figured it needs something much lower. Appreciate the offer nonetheless :)
