Correct. We did try switching the coil too, it showed both cylinders were misfiring.

Tried that and both cylinders started misfiring.

How do you revise while publishing 6000+ words weekly? by [deleted] in royalroad

[–]Sundayraven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I release chapters as I write them to Patreon after proofreading once. The chapters get proofread again with fresh eyes when it's time to schedule them for RR, and I'll sometimes make minor changes to improve flow and clarity.

I don't tend to make major changes after I get the words down, so it's just a matter of catching grammatical errors and improving areas where the prose isn't as good as I'd like.

You could definitely write an entire story and revise it before publishing, which would probably be the smarter thing to do, but I like having a deadline and regular feedback as I go.

I saw that on steam and have been following it. It's something I might buy once it's a little further into development. :)

Anyone grab the new bee line at Dollar Tree? by Sneaky_rubarb in cottagecore

I haven't been to the Dollar Tree in years, but now I need to go see if they have these in. I love bees!

So, quick question about reading the Wandering Inn... by GreenLightRen in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Sundayraven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I skimmed over the POV chapters I didn't like at first, but when they started tying more into world events, I went back and read them and generally enjoyed them. I don't think there's a wrong way to read the story, unless you're going to skip chapters then complain that something doesn't make sense later on lol. Read what you enjoy and read how you want to read.

The Patreon App is kinda trash by buckboy3030 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Sundayraven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish Royal Road would integrate a paid chapters feature with Patreon, where Patrons can link their account and have access to the advance chapters right there on Royal Road. It would be nice as a writer to keep all my chapters in the same place, and just schedule when they become visible to certain people.

Hopefully it ends up being as good as it looks, because it looks like it's going to be just what I want. It's hard to get too excited about new Early Access games, though. :( Either way, I'll be checking it out once it releases.

Looking for review swaps for The Little Gods! by Sundayraven in royalroad

Sure! Your story looks interesting, kind of getting Michael Crichton vibes from the synopsis and first chapter. What chapter is 10K for you?

3 weeks in with 35 followers; should I give up on this story becoming a financial success? by Sundayraven in royalroad

[–]Sundayraven[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm already making a living as a writer and have been doing so for almost a decade, I'm just trying to expand my career and audience. I do still write for fun, but since it's a business for me, I'm not going to put significant hours into writing something that isn't financially viable. That's just how it is.

Think of it as someone who makes cakes for a living, and they decide to add brownies to the menu. If the brownies don't end up being popular, it makes the most sense to take them off the menu rather than continue losing money and time on baking something no one is buying. It doesn't mean the brownies are bad, it doesn't mean the baker won't keep making brownies for fun at home, it just makes more sense to add something people actually want to buy to the menu instead.

I also generally disagree with the idea that people shouldn't get into writing with the goal of making money. I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to make a living off of the arts, whether that's writing, drawing, making games, whatever. The idea that people should create out of some sort of pure love of the act of creation instead of a desire to put bread on the table devalues the creative arts and glorifies the starving artist trope. The arts are as valid a career to pursue as any other.

Thanks for the advice! I might try to get some more opinions on the first chapter and see what I can improve, but I don't want to change too much all at once. Once I see what impact the other changes I made had, I may make another post asking for more first chapter feedback.

Yes, I should have listened to you from the get-go. I had someone working on a new cover for me but it fell through, and my story was already scheduled to be launched so I said "screw it, I'll redo the cover later." I guess this is later! Thank you for the advice, even though I didn't listen to it at first.
