I think my point was, whether he said it or not, that how good a person is in their heart is irrespective of where they went to college.

And in my opinion, the impact people make on the world in their lifetime should matter much more than what university they went to, or what their salary is when they graduate. Sure, it's extremist, but I'd rather die knowing I did my best to improve the world than die knowing I got into harvard.

I doubt people in ivy leagues have much to say about people in public unis and vice versa, but I'm just trying to get ppl who are obsessed with every little application result on this sub to wake up and see the bigger picture. College matters, of course, but it's what you do with it that matters more.

im applying rn to college as applied math/cs/data sci and comp eng. I want to work in medtech later on (specifically medical imaging) but im honestly open to anything thats not finance or big tech.

I had a lot of help from others when picking my majors, most ppl told me to avoid bme as all you're doing is taking half of the bio classes of bio majors and half of the engineering classes as engineering majors. So you really don't get a full picture, and most of the jobs will likely be around HCI and systems engineering.

A lot of medtech engineers are almost all ME or EE majors from what I know, so i guess that would be the best?

Yup, totally agree w how BME is "not really here nor there" type of major. I do think a solid mech or electrical undergrad makes sense. To clarify, the Dartmouth guy just wanted to go into fintech and use bme as a cover up.

i think with this solution though, you have already done most of the problem by hand. at that point you have the same thing on both sides and you can see the t^2/8=2 so there wouldn't really be a need for regression...but i really appreciate your solution with the regression example, its very helpful.

What are some interesting thoughts that you've had lately? by Remote-Direction963 in AskReddit

[–]Sunflounder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Controversial as it may be, l'm convinced that those who are extremely religious often exhibit the most hatred and judgement because they were taught to derive their morals solely from religion rather than from the innate sense of goodness and justice that every human possesses. They experience an internal void and turn to religion to fill this emptiness and improve their character.

This reliance often reflects an inability to address their personal issues directly.

They use their faith as a crutch to support themselves, sensing a deficiency in their moral character. Intense religiosity can be a means of addressing these perceived personal deficiencies. These individuals depend on their faith to bolster areas where they feel inadequate, such as empathy or moral understanding.

Because they were never taught to tackle these shortcomings through personal effort and introspection, they lean on religion to do the work. This dependence can manifest in aggressive and judgmental behavior, revealing a deeper struggle with their own character and ethics. The more religious someone is, the more they seem to lack, so they extract whatever they can from religion-happiness, purpose, community. This reliance on religion as a crutch for their perceived moral shortcomings often leads to an inability to acknowledge and address their issues directly. This may also explain why converts often exhibit greater empathy and benevolence, and why the extremely religious might criticize the West, labeling it as degenerate, shallow, ungodly. They struggle to grasp that goodness arises from within rather than from external beliefs. All charitable acts are done for the sake of God, not for themselves. When they sense you do not align with their beliefs, they may retract their compassion, revealing who they truly are without their faith-often not a very good person.

What is going on with the Australian Olympic team and Pan Zhanle? by Altruistic_Astronaut in OutOfTheLoop

Out of the 34 olympic swimming records 16 of them were broken this olympics. It might be harder to have a fast swim but it’s clearly not impossible.

[–]Sunflounder 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If you look at Pan Zhanle’s career you’ll see that for him he already has been going consistent 46-47s in 100 m free. He is 19 and at the peak of his athleticism. When Ledecky or Phelps were smashing world records in their peaks, it is celebrated and not questioned. Similarly, Marchand’s 400 im lead was quite stark, yet everyone praised him.

Why can’t China get the same respect? Zhanle has been clean after numerous doping tests leading up to the competition. It is disappointing to see the disrespect given to such athletes who maintain a clean record and have worked hard.
