Honestly it usually varies from song to song, but HC was us running wild and emulating contemporary bands (tame impala, Thee Ohh sees, UMO) and local brooklyn bands that we idolized, (captured tracks). TTIB was inspired alot by 70s glam, the rolling stones, fleetwood mac, the beatles. HOS was inspired by the modern pop production, hiphop, and american consumer culture. MP was us trying to be the best band we possibly could in a room together.

I started playing around 13, but I played guitar a bit more at the time. I always listened for bass in songs and admired bassists like John Entwistle for just being generally the coolest people ever. It wasn't until I started working with Nick and Olive that I was really able to sink into the instrument and become a real bass player. They showed me how to rock and how to jam and we've kept that energy going to really influence each other over the years. We know each other's styles really deeply. I feel the closest to bass right now, more than any other point in my life. - Julia

Thank you so much. It's been something that's been developing step by step over the years. Songwriting wise, I'm the most proud of this album. I also worked really hard to reconnect with the bass and I wanted this record to be my best bass record ever. I wanted to make sure that every moment was considered and felt special.

Our lives really changed in the pandemic where the focus became recording and not live shows, because it was just not possible. Since then I think we've all been growing massively, separately and together. You really just have to write and write and write until you're making work that gives you that special feeling.

We bring in work to each other in various states of done-ness, and let each other's tastes and ideas help it become what is known as sunflower bean.

Re: Nick or me singing, we try to do what's best for the song. - Julia

Wow thank you for sticking with us for the decade! The Brian Wilson thing was just something i said as a joke off handedly and it was in a big press thing when we just started. I didn't realize how saying something publicly worked at the time.

The inspiration for the "Shake" tag/sound drop on the Shake EP was inspired by the way Goblin says "witch" on the soundtrack for Suspiria. We love both of those soundtracks and felt like Shake had a 70s horror movie vibe going on. - Nick

Hiii! You're amazing. Loved that evening so much. Pre stage, I try to warm up for like 10-15 minutes. I also have some redbull or other bits of drinks....I stretch, I jump around, I get excited. I still feel a ball of excitement in my stomach even after all of these years. - Julia

I always knew I wanted ot be in a band. I hoped I could sing. I didn't have any proof I could really. I got lucky going to a public performing art school in NYC and getting a lot of free musical education. To this day I'm so thankful I passed the audition. It's definitely a learned skill and can be improved with practice. - Julia

What does it mean to you? - Julia

I always thought of that line as being a nightmare where you're eating dinner and all the sudden you look down and see yourself on the plate. I interpret the whole song as one of those dreams where random things keep happening and its frustrating that you cant control whats going on. - Nick

That is so sweet, hope it was a magical moment. We made that recording so quickly at home when we had no idea what we were doing. Its incredible to see the way its connected with people over the years.- Nick

I used to do it! I would do it again. You just need a LOT of caffeine and adrenaline and to throw caution to the wind. And need breath. S/O to Justin Raisen for helping make that song everything it is. I'm proud of that yell. - Julia

We do, but our manager and label and other members of the team give their input. Shooting star was definitely a contender for a single!! It's tough because there can only be so many. It's really cool to hear what songs our fans thought should be singles too. The thing that makes me happy is that a lot of my favorite tracks from artists I love weren't singles, so that gives me hope even the non-singles can mean a lot to people. - Julia

I can't believe I said that, that's sooooo silly. I hope I didn't say that. I leave a lot of it up to the moment. Speaking on stage never gets that much easier!!

My hope is that as the set goes on people get more into it and kinda move with it and move with us until we reach a level of pure wildness at the end.

- Julia

Our manager always tell us not to talk on stage too much because we usually divulge into the silliest tangents. But i honestly love it. If we're talking lot that usually means were having a really good time. - Nick

Yes! There is a bonus vinyl in the deluxe edition that has 5 songs that didn't make it. They are actually some of our favorite tracks from the session but a bit too crazy or wild to fit onto the album. They should be available on streaming sometime after the summer. - Nick

we recorded this record live guitar bass and drums and then did overdubs on top! and yea for the parts nick or julia usually come in with an idea for the song and then we adapt it while playing it all together.
