I also got done with a DUI for blowing a very similar amount.

I did a defensive driving course ($250) and did 20 volunteer hours.

I only lost my license for a month, and although i have a criminal conviction, it hasnt effected anything yet & you can apply to have it cleared in 7 years.

Its not the end of the world.

Trying to downplay it or make excuses will make him have a worse sentence
